My favourite kobolds were, of course, those from Nashkel mines in Baldur's Gate. The little buggers were easy to kill but those damned traps and fire-arrows really fracking hurt!

I don't actually see any kobolds, I just see numbers.

Something's statblock isn't the creature, nor is it IMO the most important part of their presentation in each edition (that's their flavor text and also the artwork and any usage in published modules, etc).

Oh memories...

Agreed, couldn't care less about stat blocks.

4e kobolds for their ability to shift as a minor that opens a lot of interesting fight opportunities.
And I like more lizard (or dragon-like) kobolds than previous version. Actually this is because of the strange link between kobolds and dragons that is engraved in my mind after Dragon Mountain.

I want the average kobold to:

- be killed in one hit or spell by the average martial adventurer. Exceptionally weak hits should still leave them alive.

- rely on traps, sneaky tactics and superior numbers to win their battles.

- flee when the going gets tough.

- require an above average roll to hit for a low level adventurer since they're jittery little buggers.

Stat blocks don't mean a thing when we have no system yet.

The society of these creatures is tribal with war bands based on gens. The
stronger tribes rule weaker ones. Kobolds are usually found in dank, dark
places such as dismal overgrown forests or subterranean settings. They
hate bright sunlight, not being able to see well in it, but their night vision is excellent, and they have infra-red vision which operates well up to 60'. If they are in bright sunlight they have a lesser chance to fight well (-1 from dice rolls to hit opponents).

Kobolds revere dragons and tend to dwell in and around
places where dragons are known to lair. They skulk in the
darkness, hiding from stronger foes and swarming to overwhelm
weaker ones. Kobolds are cowardly and usually flee
once bloodied unless a strong leader is present.
Kobolds like to set traps and ambushes. If they can’t get
their enemies to walk into a trap, they try to sneak up as close
as they can and then attack in a sudden rush.

Kobolds are a cowardly, sadistic race of short humanoids that vigorously
contest the human and demi-human races for living space and food. They
especially dislike gnomes and attack them on sight.
Barely clearing 3 feet in height kobolds have scaly hides that range
from dark, rusty brown to a rusty black. They smell of damp dogs and
stagnant water. Their eyes glow like a bright red spark and they have two
small horns ranging from tan to white. Because of the kobolds' fondness
for wearing raggedy garb of red and orange, their non-prehensile rat-like
tails, and their language (which sounds like small dogs yapping), these
fell creatures are often not taken seriously. This is often a fatal mistake,
for what they lack in size and strength they make up in ferocity and
tenacity.

These evil dwarf-like creatures behave much like
goblins, but are less powerful. A chieftain fights like a
gnoll, as does his bodyguard of 1-6. Kobolds are highly
resistant to magic and get a +3 on all saving throw
dice except dragon breath. They have infravision.
These small, evil doglike humanoids usually
live underground in clans of 10 to 60 members.
They have scaly, rust-brown skin no hair. They
have well-developed infravision with a 90'
range. They prefer to attack by ambush.
Kobolds hate gnomes and will attack them on
sight.

This humanoid is about the size of a gnome or Halfling. It has a scaly hide, a naked tail like that of a rat, and a doglike head with two small horns.
Kobolds are short reptilian humanoids with cowardly and sadistic tendencies.
A kobold’s scaly skin skin ranges from dark rusty brown to a rusty black color. It has glowing red eyes. Its tail is nonprehensile. Kobolds wear ragged clothing favoring red and orange.
Kobolds usually consume plants or animals but are not averse to eating intelligent beings. They spend most of their time fortifying the land around their lairs with traps and warning devices (such as spiked pits, tripwires attached to crossbows, and other mechanic contraptions).
Kobolds hate almost every other sort of humanoid or fey, especially gnomes and sprites.
Kobolds speak Draconic with a voice that sounds like that of a yapping dog.

What the heck is a "gen"?
