D&D 5E Which Magic the Gathering setting would you want added officially to D&D?

Timestamp is about 55:15.

Nate Stewart says:
"But 2020 we're going to go really lots of really diverse stuff that brings in some different cultures and different influences... but 2020 products are going to have a couple of major products that have a lot of influence from other cultures that we have not really touched on before that I think are pretty prevalent."

Not much detail there of course, but it's pretty interesting how all these pieces fit together. What we know about upcoming products;

  • 2020 has a "couple" of products with different cultural influences "that haven't been touched on before."
  • There is a product with several different adventures written in it by outside consultants (including Debora Ann Woll, Marisha Ray, and DMsGuild writers).
  • There is possibly going to be more setting books after the success of Ravnica.
  • There is something in the works with a Planescape/Spelljammer/Fey influence, as hinted by Perkins with gnome mindflayers and chwingas mentioned.

Kind of wondering if the "adventure compilation" may have different cultural influences, or whether it's a setting, or a new big AP (I know Descent/ToA/SKT aren't technically APs but the name fits well).

Certainly easier to type "AP," even if it is a slight misnomer.

I feel like we have some serious surprises in store. The bits and bobs are tantalizing.

Yeah, no. The outlined Kara-Tur setting from the back of 1e OA had two Chinas (and two Japans), sure, but that was just setting fluff appended to the end of the book. Minus that, there is very little China (or non-Japanese culture) influence in the book—outside of some monsters, a hack of a magic-user class, the barabarian and monk—it was pretty much all Japan-inspired. Like I said, lipservice.

Shou Lung alone has had much more for influence on Toril then the two fantasy Japan's combined, in fact Faerun people refer to the peoples of Kara Tur as the Shou, the way North Americans refer to those of Asia as Asians.

And you have to look at more then just OA 1e, to have to look at all the Kara Tur products and mentions in other products.

IIRC, he didn't really specify Forgotten Realms in the stream, though. Just that 2020 books would deal more with non-European elements, and they had consultants coming in to help with that.

Calishman seems a reasonable possibility for adventure, since it is on the Sea of Swords.

You could be correct, perhaps I am wrong.

Like what?

Well, for instance, will there be a setting book, or multiple setting books? Probably at least one, but maybe not.

If so, which settings? Maybe Magic, but which Magic?

There will probably be one big Adventure storyline made by Perkins, but what will it be?

Will there be 3 or 4 hardcover books? Will there be new ancillary products similar to Rick & Morty or the Essentials Kit?

Will there be a new Monster book?

Will there be another old-school adventure compilation?

What is the book that has all of these contributions from various outside writers being organized by Welch?

Questions, more questions...

Looking to waht Stewart is quoted as saying above:

That's slightly tantalizing, but also super vague. Nothing about the Forgotten Realms, but it doesn't rule out the Forgotten Realms as such. More remains to be seen.

But the discussion was OA, not Kara-Tur. If you want to Kara-Tur to be redone, yay, but that's a different beast than the highly Japano-centric OA which was be discussed.

Why would anyone redo the OA1 when they could do an updated current Kara Tur?

Maybe we will see a fantasy Africa, and that is not wrong.

Kamikawa is too "small" for adventures no-linked to the "kami-wars". Or a spin-off or a new oriental world.

We need worlds where no-planewalkers and "low-level" characters can be the heroes of their own stories.

If there ir a new OA then we will have to see the playtesting of new classes, maybe the sohei or martial adepts as the swordsage, warblade and crusader. Also I suggest a new race, the kemonomimi (animal ears), the hengeyokai are different. Some 3rd party companies have published their own version of OA with some interesting ideas.

Innistrad is fabulous, but it may be a true headache if we start to talk about a crossover with Ravenloft.

Kaladesh is an arcanetech setting, and the d20 system isn't ready yet enough for vehicles "with motor". If we see more motorised vehicles in D&D should be sign of d20 Modern 2.0. to be comingsoon.

Maybe the D&D books about Magic worlds will be more fluff than crunch. Or it will be a setting created for both games, D&D and M:tG.

Innistad could just be a domain of Ravenloft that started as a MtG world.

If we get a 5e OA setting, it will be Kara Tur, perhaps with references to other settings, so that characters in Faerun have an easy access to it.

Altered Infernal Warmachine rules would do fine for Kaladesh.

It could be for both Classic D&D worlds and MtG worlds, that could be why Dragonlance and,Greyhawk have been unlocked in DMSGUILD.
