D&D General Which Previous Edition (poll; read OP)

If I had to do an older edition, it would be 3.5. As long as we stopped somewhere around 14th level or casters were reined in somehow.

I was torn on breaking down both 1E and 2E into their early/core versus later/heavily supplemented "editions." By and large across editions I think I enjoy the simplicity of just core more, but I kind of think that is from a primarily DM perspective.

By that logic, it's hard to consider BX and BECMI separate editions.

I'm the lonely little snowflake. I know it's annoying, but the bottom line: it doesn't really matter. I'd happily play any edition, if the group and campaign is good.

But push comes to shove, I guess I'd prefer 3.5 or 4E in some form or fashion. But it would also be fun to play OD&D or AD&D or BECMI, for gits and shiggles.

That's not true at all. Sure, BECMI has more later, but they aren't exactly the same early on. There are notable and significant differences in thief skills, for example.

2E would depend on campaign and what books were being used.

4e pre-essentials. it was my first edition i played that i actually understood (technically i think i played 5e a couple times over discord and in high school before then but i had no idea what i was doing and they never got past session 1 so i don't think that counts) and i'd like to know how the game plays after level 5 since that's as far as we got.
