If the financial history of Star Wars projects is any indication, the IP is far less popular now than it has ever been.
Um, Actaully... The Star Wars IP is in a bit of a bear market right now, buts it's nowhere near its lowest point.
Absolute rock bottom would have been 1987-91. Kenner had dropped it's last toy line, there were no new books being published, no TV shows, no nothing. Not even a hint of a movie. The IP was virtually dead. That's how West End Games was able to get the license and go to town with the RPG.
Things started to pick up by 1991, with Del Ray (as Bantam) starting to publish EU novels again with the Zhaan trilogy and Dark Horse Comics getting into swing with Dark Empire, but the IP was still much, much less valuable than today.
It finally started to get back on its feet around 1997 with the Special Edition theatrical re-release and home video success. But it wasn't truly back in full swing until 1999 when Phantom Menace was released.
I don't have exact numbers or insider information, we're nowhere near the lull of the 87-99 era. Like, not even remotely close. There's toys, books, shows, video games, and merch everywhere, and a new movie being promoted.
