Who still plays Basic D&D?

This gives a class template that looks like this...

RANGER
  • Hit Die: d6
  • Combat: as Fighter
  • Thievery: HS,MS,and HN as Thief of equal level
  • Save: as Fighter
  • Prime Req: Str
  • Req Exp: 1700

As an additional (optional) variation...

We could choose to make him a missile specialist, raising his Combat rating by 1 for purposes of missile fire, and lowering it by 1 for purposes of melee (though his actual combat rating remains unchanged). This would result in a template like this...

RANGER
  • Hit Die: d6
  • Melee: as Thief
  • Missile: as Monster
  • Thievery: HS, MS, HN
  • Save: as Ftr
  • Prime Req: Str
  • Req Exp: 1700

Now, THAT is a stat block I can handle. :)

Thanks for the email.

I might just sign up for the mailing list. I am on the AQ mailing list, and have been for a very long time. Things always seem more "civil" than on message boards. I am growing tired of some MBs lately. If you like D&D, in any incarnation, you shouldn't have to defend yourself against other D&D "gamers." :(

Rather than starting a new thread in house rules, I thought I'd ask this here...

I've been thinking of including a variant Elf Template, one that isn't tied to the Mystaran conception of all Elves being users of magic--something along these lines...

ARCANE (Option II)

(4) (200%)

(3) N/A

(2) M-U

(1) 1/2

(0) None

This would account for an Elf's magical nature, without necessarily requiring that he be a spellcaster.

My question is this...

What would be an appropriate experience penalty for the above?

Perhaps an Elf would only earn 75% experience up to 10th level? (Rather than the 50% of the Mystaran variety.)

Thanks in advance :)

Not to drive anyone away from EN World, but Dragonsfoot www.dragonsfoot.com has setup a message board for Basic D&D. It might be a good gathering place. One word of caution, be careful to reference d20 or 3e in some of the other forums. Before their server having a time of troubles, it was home to many 3e bashers. It is a new look and new site, but I am sure some of the old folks will show up again.

What? Me Worry?
I think you mean be careful NOT to reference 3e/d20. What's weird is that they have a 3e forum now; I started posting, but I'm gonna quit. So far I'm the only one who hasn't listed everything that is bad about 3e, and I'm the only one who admitted to liking 3e without qualifying the statement with a list of what doesn't work. I kind of figured I should just toddle along...

Like the situation on the WotC OOP board--only in reverse :(

I don't know why it seems to bother some peolple when someone else enjoys something a bit different from their own preferences, oh well...

In any event, I think www.dragonsfoot.org is going to be a nice place to gather and discuss the older editions of our favorite pastime. I hope you still drop in once in a while. :)

For instance, another product I could imagine would be a Rules Cyclopedia for 3E. It would only present the "corest" of the core classes (Fighter, Rogue, Cleric, Wizard) and races (Human, Elf, Dwarf, Halfling), the most popular feats and spells (primarily at lower levels too), and everyone's favorite monsters (Goblins, Hobgoblins, Ogres, Giants, etc.), along with some introductory DMG material.
If WOTC had published a book like that I'd be playing 3E today. Guaranteed!

Like the topic says...I'm just curious as to who out there still plays Basic D&D--anyone?

I do, or at least I would if I could get my players to go along with it. They are too infatuated with 3E at this point, because it gives them a lot of control they didn't have in previous editions. However I'm killing my 3E campaign because I don't enjoy DMing it anymore, so we'll see.

Bah, as it should be

Regdar, I must confess. When I play the Adventure Game, I insist on playing Regdar. No other pre-generated character will do. :D

Of course, everyone should. Regdar is pleased.

After looking at all these adjustments, it still seems just as easy to use 3e. Adding Two Weapon fighting, and everything else to create what is already available to you all.

Even going back through the old stuff like Regdar did last weekend, Regdar still doesn't see what Basic has to offer.

You say that like it's a bad thing, Alcamtar.

Because of the 3E rules?
