A friend and fellow CoC roleplayer asked last night: "Why do people play D&D?" and while I have my own reasons, I got to wondering why others do. So, if you're currently playing D&D, why?

(I recall a similar thread a while back, but a quick search didn't yield anything, hope its ok to start a new thread)

It's the big daddy of RPGs, therefore the easiest to get supplements and material for.

It's the one most of my friends are most familiar with.

Comfort level.

Why play D&D ? Because it's fun.

Why play D&D over other tabletop RPGs ? Because it's the game that still allows for the wider play styles, since it stands at the crossroads: it's possible to play D&D with lots of RP immersion, with lots of tactical encounters, while using miniatures or not, homebrew settings or not, and so on. You can make the game suit nearly any play style you want without too much work, as the myriad of d20 games, all variations of D&D's mechanics to some degree or another, have long proved to me and a wide variety of fans out there. It also means that D&D has the wider "shared experience" out there, partly because of the system, and partly by virtue of being the first widely played modern RPG.

Because that's what the rest of the group is playing. If it were up to me, yeah--I'd probably play something else. But D&D's a fun enough compromise for those of us (like me) who'd like to play something else but can't agree on what and the others in the group who have never really looked beyond D&D in their entire RPG career and have no interest in doing so.
