Legend
We should remember the famous dungeon-crawnling board game "Hero Quest" suffered the worst case, it was "dead" during two decades, until they released a new edition (maybe because somebody working for Hasbro read us here) and now it has got more expansion than the original, even it is sold better.
Hasbro could licence some subfranchise, something like when Ravenloft was published by White Wolf.. (and the number of titles had to mean the sales had to be good) but this may have got some risks.... are canon the things published in 3rd Ed? Hasbro would rather to have complete creative control about its IPs.
Hasbro wanted its videogame studios were its IPs farm but I am afraid WotC can do it sooner and cheaper.
Today the hobby is too known and popular thanks Stranger Things, Critical Role or videogames. I doubt seriously D&D to lose brand power but if there is some surprise. The hobby is going to enjoy good health and D&D will keep enjoy a growing popularity.
Perhaps Hasbro/WotC bets for becoming a third-party distributor in addition to publishing its own titles. The goal with the TTRPG section would be to earn more brand power but the strategy would be other lines like main income-sources (specially videogames).
* Did you know there was an official D&D-Fortnite collab? I was surprised they didn't do it before.
