Will you mix playstyles?

I think that the thing about DDN that will most likely and most explosively blow up in WotC's face upon launch is the claim that you will be able to mix playstyles in one group, not just from a mechanical perspective but from the perspective that all will have a satisfying experience at the table.

It's just not possible.

Now, having said that, if they somehow DO manage to pull off the impossible and it all does work, a cosmic event that requires Nuitari, Lunitari and Solinari to align for sure, then the all important question becomes: WILL you mix playstyles in your group?

The explosive potential of having a diehard grognard sit next to a 4tard (I'm allowed to say that because I'm a 4e fan) is just too good for me to pass up. I'm already planning on how I will rope in players to test this new, non-nuclear, WMD just to see the destruction it will leave behind and witness the devastation as it unfolds at ground zero.

So... up for a game?

Realistically I think when these two sit down to play 5E together they will each have to make sacrifices in terms of modular options.

I will... I don't have people I game with who are hardcore one style above another, so I imagine my future games will be mishmashes of whatever seems to be most fun.

I'm not sure I'd shoot the horse before it gets out of the gate. Let's see the rules first so we can see if having different playstyles is possible.

While I'm cautious and reserved about the WotC's goals, I do wish WotC success in being able to pull it off.

Player A: Alrighty then, let's figure out which modules we're going to use this time. I think that we can safely get rid of THAC0....

Player B: Hmmmm... I think we can safely get rid of your neck and probably both arms too...

:)

Sadly, I think they might sacrifice each other if 5e isn't awful carefull :p

When they discuss having two different "styles" of D&D at the same table, they mean character styles, not game styles. That means you can have a simple Slayer-style hit-and-damage fighter at the same table as a 4e-style martial exploit fighter. It's not really different from 4e essentials classes mixed with PH1 classes or having a warlock and a wizard at the same table in 3.5. The only difference is that the game is designed from the beginning to accommodate both styles of PC.

They also want D&D to support multiple styles of game, including 4e-style tactical encounters and OSR-style dungeon exploration. But that's a table decision, not a player-by-player decision.

WotC just wants everyone playing D&D. We don't all need to play together. We just need to play nice.

Huh. I'm gonna play with the group I normally play with rather than grab some random dude off the street to see if he has a "different playstyle".

That said, I'll let the players play however they want.
