Wishin' is fo' suckahs...

119-340 soldiers, and some portion of the enemy's spell-casters is a fair dent, and if the earthies succeeded at elevating my side of the battle field, I'm also left with an excellent tactical advantage. The opposing army will have to somehow deal with a 20' cliff. Either they retreat and go around it, giving my army and I a temporary reprieve to use our knowledge of their forces to devise new tactics, or use their siege equipment a long ways from my city, only to have to repeat that procedure if they gain the 'walls'.

It might not be certain victory, but it'll sure put a crimp in my foe's plans...
Depends on the army (a lot; for example, the low end (119) assumes an average roll on the number of elementals, assumes each elemental slays one thing per round, and assumes negligable travel time between slayings; an army of, say, level-5 paladins won't take that high of losses) but yes; serious crimpage.

Gaah!! I'm a schmuck!! FIRE ELementals have a Firey Aura that deals damage in a large radius!! (Of course, they're GONNA get Dismissalled...unless the 'Air' Force keeps the spell-slingers' heads down...)

How about I wish I could defeat the army.

Twist that one.
And the classic response would be a mundane dagger appearing in your hand. Or more appropriately a Wand of Fireballs, or several scrolls of Acid Fog.

The issue with Wish is the 1e vs. 3e issue. The original 1e Wish spell was unlimited in power, but the GM was encouraged to twist the result. The 3e Wish spell is very limited in power, and also has an exp cost, so it really does not need GM twisting.
Precisely the point I was trying to make in my earlier post. Aside from being a 9th level spell, Wish already has a HUGE drawback. It shouldn't be overly nerfed merely because it's fun to creatively twist the meaning.

I think a good rule of thumb is to try to achieve the requested result by replicating spells (and generally setting suitable, 9th level spell DCs). It's also SURPRISINGLY simple to do this.

Mind you, if I had my choice of 9th-level arcane spells, Wish would probably not be on the list.
The original topic question was how to kill an army with three wishes, based off of a high-level Ur-Priest's ability to cast three per day without the standard 5000 XP pricetag. With any 9th level spell, Shapechange is up there in usefulness; change shape as a free action -> you can have any Draconic breath weapon you like available; pick one of the five elements, pick line or cone, and you can more than likely look up the dragon to suit. Likewise, you could pick highest Frightful Presence that you qualify for, and just swoop over the army. You could also shapechange into an undead that Creates Spawn quickly and wade in to forge the opposing army into your own. And that's just with Shapechange (which, to be fair, is one of the strongest 9th level spells for facing down an army).

3 Wishes a day for free??? DANG! And my DM thinks Psionic Meditation is broken????!!!! That's like +3 to all stats after 6 days, up to 5 if he can also cast Wish and take the 5k XP a pop hit (or pay someone to do it).

So, what's the catch to being an Ur-Priest?

I'll make a wish that can't backfire! I wish for a turkey sandwich, on rye bread, with lettuce, and mustard, and... I don't want any zombie turkies, I don't wanna turn into a turkey myself, and I don't want any more weird surprises, you got it!

... mmm, not bad, nice hot mustard, good bread, turkeys a little dry... THE TURKEY'S A LITTLE DRY!!!

The entire D&D pantheon hates you, and routinely sends crusading armies after you (if your DM plays the prestige class right).

But yeah, the Ur-Priest is kinda overpowered for a PC; the thread that spawned this one can be found here

Yes... but what does that do about the army that's chasing you?

Zadam - The turkey ain't dry. Its rotten. You are gonna die of salmonella.

Jack - Sounds like fun :) The normal D&D pantheon is a bit wussy anyways.
