As much as wizards will generally suck harder than a Hoover in melee combat, I think the idea of a spellcaster with a big sword is just amusing. On a vaguely related note, in my current campaign we've got a gnome barbarian who uses a human sized great axe, thus suffering a -4 penalty to all attacks. The players are still 1st level. I love it when players ignore mechanics in favor of interesting characterization.
