D&D (2024) Working on ideas for my next character.

Aldridge B. Hex was eaten by sharks and will no longer be inspiring people to overcome their fears.

I'm toying with the idea of a rogue next. I'm thinking of using a forest gnome going thief and using a net as the main weapon and a nick weapon as the offhand, and later a rope as a bonus action with fast hands.

This should allow taking the attack action and replacing my attack with the net, and also attacking with the nick weapon because I'm taking the attack action. Restraining with the net means the target is attacked with advantage and attacks with disadvantage, and requires at least one action to free themselves from the net. The fast hands allows for using the rope to bind a target already restrained on a bonus action and also requires and action to free themselves.

The idea is action denial while sneak attacking. I'd be interested in thoughts or suggestions on that, and help with an interesting name.

Don't think that works.
The net is not a light weapon, and doesn't qualify for Nick.

You can still Net + Fast Hands a rope though.

Also, I kind of feel like using a Whip + Slasher feat and call him Bond would be appropriate.

Depends if I can talk the DM into allowing it. If not it costs me that one off hand attack. I would allow it.

Manacles are also a possibility. If I used a whip I'd probably rip off Indiana Gnome somehow.

As a DM, I may have problems with tying up someone caught in a net. If it takes them an action to untangle themselves from the net, would you even be able to tie them up unless you untangle them first? Likely not a rules answer, so DM fiat would be needed.

I like easy names that may just be the PCs nickname. Something like Acorn is easy for the others at the table to remember and his real name can be more background. I would name the move of net and dagger combo something like a catchphrase. Something like Rope-a-Dope or Going Fishing.

Why would a person have to untangle a net to tie them up in rope? Being restrained is the condition required to tie them up so creating that condition and then removing that condition seems counterproductive.

I like Nick Fisher, but it might become tangled with the nick property by some.

I picture the difficulty with tying someone up with them also being tangled in rope as well. At the least, you might tie the net up around them and not be able to use it on another bad guy. I kind of see it similar to placing a barrel on someone, then wanting to tie them up. Placing a carpet or cloak over someone and then trying to tie them up. I know it is a rules thing, that is why I said it may be a DM thing to decide.

You can't make an offhand attack unless you attack 1st with a light weapon. A net is not a light weapon and you don't attack with it, so it doesn't qualify for either of these. A net does not work even if you have the dual wielder feat.

You would need 5 levels in a class with extra attack to make this work.

I understand that. I'm going to swing it by my DM anyway.

Otherwise, I'll just go with the net and rope then switch to the two weapons on subsequent rounds.
