1 million GP? Pfft. You'd NEED 1 million GP just to be able to afford magic items that can make a DENT against that guy, nevermind help you kill him. So no. 1 million GP is just way to low for killing a CR 39 character.

Plus he is technically one of the good guys, even if he can be annoying at times.

And even if I was evil, I'd find a better use for that money - like inventing a magical version of telemarketing, and selling it to Amn, Thay, and any other mercantile organisation with few scruples.

Here's something to put it into perspective:

1 million GP is equal to 10 tons of pure gold. Gold currently has a price of ~$370 per troy oz, which means that to put it into perspective, the amount of gold we're talking about is worth $107M. You can buy an awful lot of heavy weaponry for that kind of money.

It's easy to write it off when you can only see it as 1 million GP, but stating it in terms of familiar units does tend to put it into better perspective.
