WTH, "Daggerdale D&D game for PC" out in may?!

Given that it's a digital-distribution title with a sub-$20 price tag, I don't think anyone is really expecting to get Dragon Age 2 out of this. It's supposed to be a fun little hack-and-slash that you can blow through in a day or two with some friends. It is not serious RPG action, but that's not what it's being billed as. The Neverwinter Nights title currently in development and scheduled for release later this year (assuming that doesn't get pushed back) will probably be closer to what you're looking for.

Just because it's not a major release title, though, doesn't mean it won't be kick-ass.

Oh, and just because someone will inevitably decry the declining state of D&D video games from serious to casual if I don't, a couple reminders on your history.
I concur. I have no problem with a small, relatively simple 4e-based game that gets the basics right. In some ways I'd rather have that then a AAA title that spends half a decade in development and ultimately disappoints.

That said, some of the things in this interview give me pause. I wonder how close to 4e this game will actually wind up being.

I hope this game has great length and enemy variety. It would be nice to include other races/classes, like Eladrin cleric, Gnome ranger, Tiefling warlock, and Dragonborn swordmage.

I interpret "streamlining" the character creation process to mean they wanted to save money when creating the armor that would go on them, textures, etc.. I am certainly not a game developer so if anyone can offer further insight I'd welcome it.

However, assuming my premise is correct, I won't expect loads of different monsters and character models until they sell us an expansion pack.

If they were going to restrict the race/class choices, I don't think they did themselves any favors by picking a suboptimal "halfling mage" build.

Human Fighter
Dwarf Cleric
Halfling Rogue
Elf Wizard

How hard was that to get?

They seem to be trying something a little less cliche, and I'm sure the halfling mage will be in no way suboptimal in the game itself.

If Im not mistaken, this is to be an action (or semi action) game, not a 1:1 conversion of 4e.

Who sais a halfling mage will be sub-optimal? Its only sub-optimal if you take everything in 4e literally (and even then I would argue its possible to make ripping builds of the race/class combos they have picked). The entire basis for speculating sub-optimal is based on the game being pure 4e, and that it will not be (no non turned based game could be)

You watch, these "sub-optimal" builds will work just fine, and might I say, Im glad they broke away from the same old tired cliche's

Human Fighter
Dwarf Cleric
Halfling Rogue
Elf Wizard

...boring.

I agree with you on both points; however, I think they should have gone whole-hog with the "non-cliche" party, e.g.:
Dwarf Thief
Elf Warpriest
Human Fighter
Halfling Mage
(Human characters can't have a "non-cliche" class...)

Or just stick with the basic race/class combos.

Human Fighter is cliche because its been done in almost every fantasy game ever.

I don't mind the cliches myself but at the same time I don't mind wonky off the wall stuff either.

But with all the race class combos out there in 4E, its impossible to please everyone. So they went with cliche classics but mixed em up a bit.

I'm sure the halfling will make a fine mage. But with the racial bonuses he gets, he would make an even better thief (+2 bonus to Thievery--for a 1st level Halfling Thief, skill in thievery goes to 11). He gets a bonus to defense vs. Opportunity Attacks, plus the "Second Chance" power, which means he can move in, strike, and get back out with a better chance to avoid getting hit. It's things like that why I said the build was "suboptimal". Not that a halfling is a mage, but that he isn't a thief.
