Ok, Im not a small guy (6'1'' 220lbs, sorry if you use the metric system). I am currently the 'enforcer' on my hockey team (ok, its roller hockey but Ill take what I can get). The only issue is I dont have great balance or flexibility. I figure yoga is a safe way to get more flexibility, balance, and endurance all of which are good qualities in general. The problem is I have no idea where to start. I want to start slow and work up, naturally, but I dont know where to start. Any help? Thanks.

Yoga has gotten so popular that you have no trouble finding a beginner's class -- particularly if you're on a college campus or in a college town.

Note that there's a wide variety of yoga styles and approaches -- ranging from a very holistic, meditative experience to high-speed workouts that border on aerobics. Check out the local alternative weekly newspapers for lists of classes and studios. Local gyms are often running them too. Stop by a couple different places, talk to the teachers, explain what your goals are, and choose a class that you think will work.

I did Yoga (more specifically, Hatha Yoga) for almost two years, and I can confirm the amazing increase in flexibility and balance.

Thing is, there aren't "beginner" classes of Yoga. You just find a place that has Yoga classes, apply, show up in comfortable clothing and follow the instructions. For the first weeks you'll not be able to perform all stances (or asanas), but with practice and time you'll get there.

Make sure your teacher is a calm and patient individual willing to help you figure out the positions.

If your afraid of just running into a class (like I was) you can start with a video. There are some really good ones out there that can start you off. It can give you a way to relax after dealing with family all day for the holidays, and start to learn the very very basics :)
To actually stick with it and get the most out of it though an actual class with teacher is best. They can help with form and technique. Just about every Gym will have classes and there are even specific places that are only yoga centers.
I would recommend however to stay away from the 'Hot Yoga' for now at least. If down the road it's something you want to try go for it, but don't try to start with it.
