Yoshi stats

Totally failing to be discouraged by the lack of notice of my Hydralisk stats, I'm starting another project: statistics for the infamous oddities known as the yoshi (from the various Mario games). Incidentally, I'm planning on using "Yoshi's Island" as my primary resource to determine the abilities and behavior of the yoshi in its natural habitat - there's a lot of things in Super Mario World (such as the different-colored baby yoshi that grow into yoshi with special powers) that have not been supported in any subsequent source.

Before I make any stats, though, I want to see what everyone else thinks. I'd love input as to how you guys think I should handle the Yoshi's assorted odd abilities. What follows are my first impressions on how I think the yoshi should probably be approached.

From a biological standpoint, the yoshi seems to me to be clearly a dinosaur: the eggs make it an unlikely mammal, the apparent lack of scales makes a reptile unlikely, and the yoshi's apparently aerodynamic and flight-friendly body make a relationship to birds plausible. So the yoshi strike me as Animals, or possibly Magical Beasts - yoshi have a lot of odd abilities, and at least one of those is probably spell-like. Also, the increased hit dice for Magical Beasts seems more appropriate, since it seems that the only way to kill a yoshi is to drop it into an endless pit.

A tounge-based natural attack with reach, incredible Grapple abilities, and Swallow Whole are obvious choices. The Yoshi is probably Large, although certaintly on the small end of Large. An ability that allows the Yoshi to quickly digest enemies that fail an easy Fortitude save and digest them into eggs seems appropriate, and racial bonuses to thrown weapons seems good too. Big bonuses to Jump, and possibly a Stomp attack, seem appropriate. Several hit dice will be neccesary to establish the needed feats and skills.

What else seems needed?

A yoshi is definately a Magical Beast. Don't worry about grapples, really. I'd say that a yoshi's tongue would be adhesive (like mimics and ropers) and would automatically grapple if it hit. Then, it's just a matter of reeling the creature in.

Oh, BTW, dinosaurs are still reptiles. Of course, so are birds.

Demiurge out.

edit: Just wanted to disillusion you about your feeling sorry for yourself. The hydralisk generated more comments than any of my kaiju, with the exception of the remarkably off-tracked King Ghidorah.

Almost all those replies were from people we know personally, Demi. I don't think that counts.

I think that Magical Beast is more appropriate than Animal. After, all, the Yoshi displays more than a modicum of intelligence (well, maybe not more...), being capable of limited speech: IIRC, in the old SMW comic in 'Nintendo Power', in a bizarre (and frightening, in retrospective) foreshadowing of the whole Pokemon thing, Yoshi was able to speak his own name. I.e., "Yoshi, Yoshi! Yoshi!" etc.

Well, I'd say Yoshi's type depends on your source. SMW Yoshi was much more dinosauroid in form, while 'Yoshi's Island' Yoshi was more anthropomorphic.

But the thing against any sort of a humanoid type is that he has doesn't have an upright position like any other humanoid has - he has all the same limbs, but he's still in that dinosaur leaning-forward shape. That's what lets a yoshi be a mount. This is the same reason why a dinosaur or a kangaroo isn't considered humanoid.

Also, the plural of "yoshi" is either "yoshis" (according to the Super Mario World manual) or "yoshies" (according to the Yoshi's Island manual). And they do seem intelligent enough to have a primitive tribal culture (or at least some form of language).

The Yoshis in Super Mario Bros. Deluxe shoul be Small, or perhaps on the small end of Medium - but not Large (they are not as tall as Mario) IIRC.

Magical Beast, I'd say, and maybe say that they "are related to the great dinosaurs through some fey linkage" - not fey as the type, but fey as in magical/faerie (like faerie fire).

Well, Khisanth, a horse isn't as tall as a human, is it?

Yoshies should be Large, as they can be ridden on by Medium creatures (like Mario)

Demiurge out.

Some horses are .. and I don't think all Horses are large, just the War and draft-type horses. i don't think a Light horse should be large ... it isn't 8 ft. long (even including the tail) or tall. And if Mario is 5 ft. tall, then yoshi is 6-7 ft. (Medium). I admit he's not Small, but Mario might be.
