Funny, I chose Warlord, simply because I have no idea what it will be like yet. :)

If I was chosen as the "Leader", I would rule with an iron thumb over the other party members and only dish out my healing to those who followed unquestionably my desires.

This sounds exactly like the only cleric I've ever played, a priest of the campaign-specific god of war & fate. He believed that healing was only to be used on those who had proven their worth by surviving a battle; if you died in the fight then clearly that was your fate & he was not one to interfere with divine will. OTOH, the one time he DID cast a healing spell during a fight was to make a (literal) meat shield out of a companion who'd just fallen unconcious between him & a weretiger; the barely-healed companion died outright on the next hit while he ran away (hey, his god had to want him to live or he wouldn't have granted the cure spell that morning, hmmm?).

Oddly enough, I'm not asked to play clerics often. :]

I don't know a lot about them at this point, but if the Warlord turns out to be a Marshal with draconic healing aura and White Raven tactics, I definitely don't want to be one of those.

I'd play whatever allows me to best emulate my archivist from our last abandoned 3.5 campaign. She was pretty much the healer and buffer for the party anyway.

So who leads?

Leadership should be based on the highest charisma, not who is qualified or smartest.

So that leaves the sorceror and the bard... well I don't fancy following Elan so I'd have to say the sorceror!

Thats if they still have sorcerors and its not been further relegated to void wizards becoming less interesting like when they claimed spontaneous casting gave sorcs such an overwhelming advantage that they reduced the hd to d4 removed the ability to select from both arcane and divine spells and didn't bother to include a single cha based skill... oh that was 3.0 and what did they do for 3.5... remove scry and add bluff as a class skill, gee I wonder why I'm still underwhelmed and less than enthusaistic with what they're planning?

I just realized what bothered me about this poll:
It's mixing two things that are completely unrelated to one another:
- The Leader (uppercase) combat role which is exemplified by the cleric and warlord classes
- The party's leader (lowercase); if any

The first three poll options are about the Leader, the fourth is about the leader.

Playing a Leader doesn't imply being the leader of the group. That's just a misconception I've seen frequently on these boards because they (unfortunately) decided that 'Supporter' sounded too passive/uninteresting as a combat role.

I voted 'Other', btw. because I tend to play whatever character I happen to favour at the moment. I don't particularly care if all the basic roles are covered.

IMC, there's is no single leader. Depending on the circumstances and the npcs involved either the fighter, the rogue, the druid, the wilder or the mystic theurge will be the spokesperson for the group.
The wilder has the highest charisma but she is only assumed to be the leader regarding psionic topics.
When it comes to decision-making they're pretty democratic about it. Typically, the fighter and the rogue are the most active and try to force a decision, but that's more a function of the players' temperament rather than their classes' function - which is as it should be, imho.

WAAAAAARLOOOOORD.

Assuming it's more like a Crusader or Warblade with the White Raven school (which seems to be the case) more than anything else. If it's much the like crappy Marshal, it can get bent, but I doubt it will be, because the Marshal is a real bum of a class.

Just to be clear and to contradict Jhaelen a little, I'm afraid, I love being the leader AND I'm the kind of person who loves these sort of classes, so I think these things do often go together. Bard is the other class I love, unsurprisingly.

I voted 'Other'...

If the option was "your late, so play either a Cleric or Warlord cause WOTC says we need the 'leader' role filled..." .. well, I may very well turn-around and walk back out of the door...
Or merrily play a cleric, and subsequently get banned from playing clerics after my habit of converting and prostelying takes the party waaay off the modules track :D

If the option is, we need you to play the leader of this merry band.. well, that would depend on the type of campaign.. is it an undead fest, a city campaign, military focus... etc..
In which case I would play whatever character type would make sense to lead in that circumstance. {altho, in keeping with habit.. probably multi- in Thief :) }
