Your personal Top Stories of 2005

Look back on the past year ... what were the top stories in your own life?

Mine:
1) Leaving the RPG Hobby: in August I had a revelation that I was not really enjoying DMing any more, or at least DMing a long-running campaign. I have not played since then. I miss it, but not enough to resume the campaign I dropped mid-story. On leaving the hobby, I felt a mixture of relief and anguish that took me a long time to get past.

2) Diet & Exercise: I lost some weight after discovering that I was consuming more calories than I was using. Spent a couple of months eating 1500 calories and walking at least 30 min a day. Lost somewhere between 15-18 lbs. Even with about 4 lbs creeping back on since fall, I am at the healthiest weight of my adult life since my early 20s.

3) "Peak Oil." Without getting too political, I will just say that a friend exposed me to some information on a potential future energy crisis that kind of reshaped my mindset to some degree. After a period of adjustment, I find that I do not feel doomed -- I feel liberated. I feel like I can enjoy today while getting ready for tomorrow and not despair. Feels good to feel like I have some control over my own destiny.

4) Work: Year 2 as Dept Chair Underway. Though I don't like parts of the assigment, taking the Library Dept Chair position for my school district has been a shot in the arm to my professional life. I'm more engaged and interested in my job than I have been in some years. There's some debate inside me as to whether I am truly the right leader for our department, but for now it's a good fit.

That's about it for me. You?

For myself, there are about 3 major events.

Getting through a really bad depression was probably the most important thing for myself. I left my neighborhood in Feb of 04, and by Nov 04 i was was in a deep depression becasue all my old friends had left me for drugs and druggies. I had gained weight and had few friends and i knew it was time to start from scratch and build myself a new network of friends. It actually all started on my Birthday, Febuary 2nd, when i got my new group of friends together to play - you guessed it - D&D. I DMed and we haven't gone back since then. Some have left and more have stayed and it's great fun :D. That, and losing about 20 Ibs of weight i had gained from being overweight due to inactivity due to depression really helped that along :) (congrats yourself Eric for losing weight - it's tough man)

Finishing highschool - i have started the begining of the end and am trying to enjoy every last minute of it while not going crazy. Making new friends and cemeting old friendships have been the order of the day, along with trying to focus on my subjects. Luckily this semester has been light, but next will be heavier

Finally getting past the 1 year mark and looking towards the 2 year mark (coming up January the 27th) with my girlfriend Monica has been the biggest thing for me. She has been an amazing companion and is very supportive of me, and it helps that she is my best friend on top of that :)

My wife is an energy economist.

Shoot me a line if you ever feel like gabbing about this.

PS I envy your weight loss. But be warned! I intend to outdo you in 2006!

1) Marriage: Definately the best thing to happen all year, I got married to my high-school crush back on February 12.

2) Changed way of thinking: At some point during the year, I realized I was taking life to seriously. Stress, headaches, illness; all were things that plagued me. I made a consious decision to view life as fun, and not take anything to seriously; live for today kind of thing. Since then I have been healthy (well, except for my recent eye problems), happy and can now just take things as they come.

Hmm. Top Stories of my life for 2005:

1. I Graduated from College. Yup, I finally, at long last, got my BA in History from the University of Kentucky.

2. I mended some destroyed friendships. I had a falling out with a few years ago that went really bad, and it caused a lot of bad blood between us and stress with our mutual friends, but we mended fences this summer, and it's been better for both of us.

3. Gen Con. I finally got to go to Gen Con for the duration. I met a bunch of you ENWorlders in person and loved it, and had an incredible weekend there in Indianapolis. Really looking forward to next year.

4. Family on Active Duty. My dad was called up to active duty in the National Guard, and is in the process of being sent over to the middle east. Needless to say, I'm quite worried for him.
