    Duels

The memorable rpg duels I've been party to have been jedi/sith lightsaber fights (always cinematic, and our campaign's jedi would always fight alone against sith because their code demanded it), a duel between wizards that were brothers that finally decided to settle their affairs once and for...

Doing away with stat boosting items

In our 15th level campaign (I'm a player) not a single character has a stat boost item. None of our spell casters use ability buffs that I've noticed. We seem to do just find. The wealth that would be used for boost items goes to other useful items instead. None of the humanoid foes we fight...

    What Makes an Encounter Exciting?

"Missing something fighter?" Redgar looked...his was sword was gone from his scabbard. Across the busy city street he could see the owner of the voice, a lone goblin smirking at him. It was a tough shot, with some many people if the way....should he take it? Then he noticed the second figure...

Making adventurers poorer without affecting overall power

Thanks. It is a rough idea, and I think there are probably some hidden traps (what happens when your weapon gets sundered or stolen? I guess pay to have it put back together or try damn hard to retrieve it.) Interestingly enough, unlike Iron Heroes it actually makes your gear alot more...

Making adventurers poorer without affecting overall power

Try this: Most magic item (outside the ones with backstories) are +1 or whatever the minimum effect is. Every 2 (or other #) character levels you go up, the item gains a +1 or equivalent ability. That's why the big bad guy is looking for his old sword...nothing else works as well for him...

    Why do you choose D&D?

I completely agree with this. One of D&D's great strengths is its tradition of "everything and the kitchen sink" style, its long standing tradition of homebrewing campaign settings, and its separation of system and setting. This (for me) helps fire up the creativity.

How many wizards does it take to screw in a lightbu- I mean, kill Elminster?

You know why high level wizards have towers instead of capitol cities? No social skills as class skills. No detection skills either. Combine that with a low fortitude save and I say a rogue or bard with maxed bluff could get close enough to do the deed. Maybe poison the wizard while they are...

the care and feeding of underlings

In the current campaign several of my fellow players have taken leadership. In terms of the cohorts they are portrayed as being equal members of the party, but with an especially close relationship to the player's pc (squire, love interest etc...). The DM normally asks what sort of cohort the...

"low" magic campaign using D&D rules

Two ideas, first: Sometimes, instead of magic items, give talents, gifts and blessings. Instead of an amulet of +1 natural armor, you've learned the technique of stone. Instead of a ring of evasion, you've received the Faerie Queen's blessing. After facing Snarg the Azure Terror in his...

    The problem of sundering

So people don't require saving throws for items on a natural one? Cause we lose more items to that than we do to sundering.....

    Military tactics vs. high-level spellcasters

Assuming these are 3.x edition wizards... a wizard's most vital possession is expensive, takes a long time to replace, and is highly flammable. When it is removed many options are open, and time becomes an ally not a foe.

What boon for 3 PCs to bring them up to the power of 4?

Grant them the Boon of Two Lives. When they run out of a resource (Spells, Hitpoints) they gain the full allotment back after 30 minutes per level once per day (30 minutes at 1, 10 hours at 20th). The first time each day they go to negative hitpoints cannot kill them. Of course such...

    MAJOR Computer Problems...Help?

When you say "messages" do you mean messages from your anti-virus program? Sasser does not effect Windows ME, as it spreads due to a flaw in 2000/XP systems. More info on Sasser and the flaw it exploits: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.sasser.b.worm.html...

    Minions for a Beholder Mage

You're spellcaster heavy. Constructs, baby, constructs. I'm thinking a stone golem with wings and climbs for crawling on walls....think very scary gargoyle. Just the thing for a beholder mage to craft in his off hours.

How FAST should he turn evil? (Updated 2/9)

I just want to know what the character is going to do when the eryines introduces him to his child. Blackguard removes his helmet..."Don't you know me....Father?" Evil cackle.

Running dungeons with high level PCs (my players don't read - and yes, I'll know!)

Earlier on (oh, about the first post) Morrus mentioned keeping the dungeon claustrophobic. We had a series of underdark crawling adventures that were very intense...until the sorceress hit 10th and got teleport. Then half of the party was relaxing in town every day. I think a way to avoid...

    Need some noncombat underdark encounters/challenges

Anytime underground is a bad time for an earthquake. In Skullport, mass chaos as the ceiling drops and buildings are swallowed. In the tunnels, extrra funs as players are seperated and are slowly crushed. Maybe its some giant cirtter passing through? And the most exciting thing: old trade...

Running dungeons with high level PCs (my players don't read - and yes, I'll know!)

Ack! You replied before I could edit my post to make sense in your specific situation! Qouting the relevant changes: You can do this with a dimensional anchor, for example. Hit the spellcaster with silence. Or you can put them on a time limit to finish the exploration. In general, without...
