    Iron DM 2010 Discussion Thread

Alright, I just spent the past couple hours writing like mad, only to realize that my entry is completely lacking in helicopter seeds. Clearly I'm more of a Pewter DM, maybe Tin. I'm sorry, Iron Sky, that I can't give you a run for your money, but congratulations anyway

    Iron DM 2010 Discussion Thread

Sorry about all this. Flooding caused me to forget about internet-y things for a couple days. But basements are cleaned and I'm ready now. My apologies again.

I'll take one of those last spots.

    Summoned Armor?

There is nothing in 4e to hinder someone from sleeping in their armor. The maximum armor check penalty in 4e is -2, nothing near the -7 of 3.5e, so even normal platemail is highly unlikely to sink you. It is power creep, but only a little. For many levels a couple of my players have had...

    Summoned Armor?

If you buy magic armor +3 and later want to upgrade it to Armor of Resistence +3, you need to use Enchant Magic Item ritual and spend 4000gp worth of residuum (see AV p198) If you buy Summoned Armor +3 and later want upgrade it to Armor of Resistence +3, you need to use Enchant Magic Item...

    Superior Cover from Allies?

Under Determining Cover in the phb is says: As far as I can tell, that means a row of medium or small creatures will only ever provide normal cover. Perhaps large allies can provide superior cover, but I wouldn't play it that way (just to keep things speedy).

Help me find a magic item

It was part of Dragon #370, but it wasn't included in the compiled issue or on the table of contents online. It, however, can still be downloaded from this address: Dragon 370: Adventurer's Vault 2 Playtest

    Rain of Steel: Modifiers?

It's definitely not a defender ability. Anything that makes the enemy want to avoid being next to the defender isn't filling the defender roll.

    4E, as an anti-4E guy ...

Pardon me if I am misunderstanding, but you want to be able to decide to do any random thing in the middle of combat? If you don't have to put thought into your actions, but somehow things are expected to work out, then why bother having the mechanics of a fight? Would you, as the player...

Making Rituals Permanent by Spending Healing Surges for a Year

The first one I remember seeing is Create Teleportation Circle from the Manual of the Planes. Another is Guards and Wards from Arcane power, which can be seen freely at: Arcane Power Excerpts: Rituals I like the mechanic. I think it's simple to keep track of and since anyone who aids in the...

Unconscious Ranger - What does the Beast do?

I read page 142 of Martial Power (Beast Companion Independent Actions) to state that once the beast has come to be adjacent to you, it can then go around the battlefield wherever it wants. But I can see how your interpretation would fit as well. I think that for the benefit of the player the...

What do I lose if I polymorph into a tiger

It seems to be cosmetic. You're just an anthropomorphic tiger or wolf.

Updated with a couple I missed from the magazines and those previewed from the Eberron Player's Guide.

Are meleerers unfairly penalized at high levels?

I think this is a real non-issue. Monsters do more in close range because generally melee characters have much better defensive abilities. As for flying monsters, no character should ever be without a ranged attack option. This has always been true in D&D.

Infinite XP Machines (respawning foes & XP)

Simplest way (without abandoning XP altogether) would be to only award XP for putting them to rest. Make it worth 2x the encounter's XP value (assuming they'll fight it once and fail to put it to rest, and learn enough to succeed the next time). 4e already has provisions for arbitrary XP giving...

Ritual Index - Up to June 05 2009

Updated with the rituals from Arcane Power. The google doc link has been changed; in the future I will try to keep the link the same, but I'm still getting the hang of editing with GoogleDocs. Don't expect much of an update next month, unless something big pops up in Dragon.

    Some questions about Sorcerers

The errata for Sneak Attack changed it to: I believe fully that this allows sneak attack with a dagger used as an implement.

Immunity: Just how much protection does it provide?

I was about to side with the MM rule, but in the PHB (page 55, Keywords) it says: I don't think you'll find an official rule either way. Although in the case of familiars it would seem best to use the MM rule so the fire lizard can be safe, I would play it the other way so that things like...

Ritual Index - Up to June 05 2009

As requested, an online version is available through Google Docs. When I converted my file to the google file, some information was lost. I think I've restored it all, but let me know if there's anything wrong. I'll update the google file when I get my hands on Arcane power, and the pdfs will...
