If he was fake

Maybe he lied to Eko in order to spur Eko to be in the right places at the right times.
Edit: in other words, maybe he wasn't actually a fake - just a liar.

I actually thought most of the episode was ok. The Bear? Eh. Even though I really do like Mr. Ecko, I was sort of hoping that they'd have the sense to leave only some bones and a bloody smear for the Polar Bear top lap at.

As for the "out of character" writing, I think the worst part of it for me was Hurley and Charlie's dialogue which felt a little tacked on (and was a lot surprising). I think Charlie's due for another heroic/violent moment soon, and I hope they have the decency to set aside his drug addiction a little to explore his character some.
