The US' Strong Museum of Play has just inducted - along with the humble swing, and Fisher-Price's Little People - Dungeon & Dragons into the National Toy Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame recognises toys and games that sustain longterm popularity, and currently contains 62 toys including Barbie, the frisbee, Monopoly, roller skates, the jigsaw puzzle, Scrabble, the skateboard, the ball, playing cards, the blanket, chess, the Rubik's Cube, even the cardboard box, and more.
With the caveat that Roll20 is now a licensed Dungeon & Dragons product, the Orr Group has released its usage stats for Quarter 3, 2016. D&D tops the chart, as always, with around half of all the usage - as much as all other tabletop RPGs combined. Pathfinder follows up with 16% of games, or 32% of players. The Orr Group notes that their player sample wise has doubled over the last year, likely due to its new status as licensed D&D software. Also noticeable are gains from Apocalypse World (likely due to the release of the new edition), Pokemon Tabletop, 13th Age (Pelgrane recently published modules on Roll20), and Mouse Guard.
In Volo's Wake is an exclusive adventure, available from last Friday (4th November) to those with a local preferred game store. It contains six 1-hour mono-adventures for 1st-4th level characters, written by Monica Valentinelli, Shawn Merwin, and Rich Lescouflair. "The town of Phandalin, nestled in the foothills to the east of the Sword Mountains, continues to grow since being rebuilt after the devastation wrought by rampaging orc hordes. It recently survived violent gang activity, drow machinations, and even the attention of a green dragon. But can it withstand a new threat, bizarre but no less perilous: the fame brought by a visit from none other than loremaster Volothamp Geddarm?" If, like me, you don't have WPN (F)LGS, you're out of luck!
One of the great things about the D&D 5E Monster Manual (a concept which I blatantly copied when creating the Bestiaries for WOIN) is the standardised NPC stat blocks which can be referenced by an adventure simply by bolding it. Volo's Guide to Monsters expands on that with a whole new bunch of NPC stat blocks, which I have listed below (thanks to @JohnnyZemo for kindly providing the list!)
New for EN5ider patrons! In this 5th Edition adventure, the PCs find themselves dead, and at the entrance to Hell itself! The River Styx, a demiplane populated by daemons tasked with shepherding souls to their final destination, is the setting for this adventure which can be run as a one-off, or used when the entire party is killed in the course of adventuring. Will they survive the Cavern of Gluttony, the grasping of the damned, the soul shriek of utter torment, the Altar to Heresy, and the the Grotto of Avarice? Can they help the fallen angel Sotira, and so gain their freedom and their lives?
The first review of Volo's Guide to Monsters has appeared! The Arcana Times was able to purchase the book yesterday, and reports that "All in all this is a great publication from WOTC and worth every gold piece. The writing and art are superb, but the biggest selling point is the shear amount of information and how it is presented. I think it is definitely worth shelling out 50 bucks for." It doesn't include a lot of new information not already out there in the many previews at this stage, but it mentions new Quirks and Obsessions and a couple of challenge ratings (0 for the cranium rat and 22 for the mind flayer lich); plus, apparently, a good appendix listing monsters by type, challenge and environment. Thanks to Atsur for the scoop.
Folks have been posting photos of their purchases of Volo's Guide to Monsters (out in preferred stores on Friday, and the rest the world on November 15th) around the web. Here's a few posts that I know of - including the table of contents! WotC has shown off tons of the book to various websites over the last few weeks, and I've tracked all of them. Don't miss hags & slithering trackers, goblins, nilbogs, kobolds, hobgoblins, & barghests, flinds, gnolls & yuan-ti, froghemoth, giants and orcs, mindflayers and beholders, fire giant dreadnoughts, giant lore, and the book's preface. Plus, of course, the 10 new monster PC races! The images below courtesy of @GarettKP, @darjr, and Lexjeid on Reddit.
For those of you still playing D&D 4th Edition, the second hardcover for the ZEITGEIST adventure path is now available (the Pathfinder version has been available for a few weeks). Weighting in at 400 pages, this Act contains four adventures which take PCs from 11th-20th level and forms the middle Act of the ZEITGEIST adventure path. The PDF is available now, and the hardcover will be available in a week or two.
This rather awesome Pumpkin King was posted on Twitter by DM Dicestress of Dead Dice Society. Happy Halloween, everybody!
The Volo's Guide to Monsters previews are coming quick and fast now! Adding to the flinds, gnolls & yuan-ti, froghemoth, giants and orcs, mindflayers and beholders, fire giant dreadnoughts, giant lore, and the book's preface comes yet another bunch of pages courtesy of Gizmodo. This time, it's goblins, barghests, hobgoblins, nilbogs, and kobolds. WotC must have shown off about a quarter of the book by now! It comes out this coming Friday (Nov 4th) in WPN stores, and 11 days later (Nov 11th) everywhere else.
Kotaku has posted a new preview of Volo's Guide to Monsters. This one looks at gnolls, lizardfolk, flinds, and yuan-ti. Don't forget to check out all the previous previews of the upcoming 224-page monster book for D&D 5th Edition - the froghemoth, giants and orcs, mindflayers and beholders, fire giant dreadnoughts, giant lore, and the book's preface. Credit goes to EN World member Entsuropi for spotting this one!
A special treat for fans of the ZEITGEIST adventure path! Over on TRAILseeker, EN World's Pathfinder RPG magazine, is a one-shot 29-page adventure for 10th level characters which can be used as a prologue a hundred years before the ZEITGEIST adventure path, or as a standalone adventure. It also includes six pregenerated characters. The adventurers face a coven of witches, led by the Red Contessa, on Flint's iconic Cauldron Hill. By Ryan Nock; cartography by James Hazelett and Jonathan Roberts. Become a patron now, and get access to this and over 80 other Pathfinder supplements and adventures.
Trapdoor Technologies has had a tumultuous ride over the last few years. They burst onto the scene with Codename: Morningstar, the official Dungeons & Dragons electronic toolset which became DungeonScape, before abruptly parting ways with WotC. Their subsequent Kickstarter failed to fund (spectacularly so, with its half-million-dollar funding goal). Their most recent Kickstarter, for an Android version of their Pathfinder tools (known as Playbook) was also struggling. It seems now that their misfortunes are coming to an end - if only because the company is closing down permanently. They sent out the announcement below.
New for EN5ider patrons! These four new monsters for your 5th Edition game are all book-themed - the Bibliognost (a living pile of books), the Djehuty (an otherworldly avatar of learning), the Living Spellbook (an ancient volume with its own will), and the Titivullus (low ranked devils charged with corrupting texts). By Artem Serebrennikov; illustrated by Indi Martin. Become a patron now and get access to this and over a hundred other 5E supplements and adventures.
Some more pages of Volo's Guide to Monsters have hit the web, this time over at Paste Magazine. These pages show off some more material on giants, and some on orcish gods. Be sure to check out their article for some more overview information about the book, as well as previous previews from around the web, including mindflayers and beholders, fire giant dreadnoughts, giant lore, and the book's preface. Volo's Guide to Monsters is a 224-page book containing monsters new to 5E, and in-depth look at a bunch of iconic monsters, and new player races.
There's a Halloween Sale going on over at RPGNow. EN Publishing is participating with 11 horror-themed products (four adventures, and seven rules articles) for your Fifth Edition games, all at a special 31% Halloween discount. The sale ends in 8 days.
