The Reverend's words visibly confuse Dee, who merely splutters as he tries to respond. Finally, Cantankerous snaps at him "Go make yourself useful, why don't you? There's a cauldron needs stirring in the back!"

Dum is Angry (+10 vs. Intimidate)
Rev. McBlusterson is Happy (+10 vs. Insight) and Open
Ben is Calm (+10 vs. Bluff)
Cantankerous is Calm and Irate (+10 vs. Bluff and Diplomacy)
Joe is Irate (+10 vs. Diplomacy)

"Ben, you're up."

Ben says "Perneyon will make an Insightful Remark attack against Cantankerous."

Perneyon slowly nods his head in understanding.

"Clearly the dangers of the Wood are beyond your henchman; thus why you have hired us. The ingredient is worth the payment of our time..." piercingly looking at Cantankerous.

The DM looks puzzled. "Ben, is there a strategic reason you're not using the more damaging Insightful Repartee? Or did you forget that Cantankerous is Open to closing attacks?"

(If you did just forget, go ahead and roll an extra d8 damage.)

Some quick rules questions for the DM:

I'm a little unclear on the mechanics here. How does Cantankerous have two attitudes? Is that an option available to everyone, or just NPCs?

Also, I didn't see how Cantankerous became open. Did he start out open? If so, how and why?

The DM just had a blond moment. "I must have mixed up the Reverend's conditions with Cantankerous, who wasn't open. But now he is, thanks to Ben."

P.S. I didn't mention this before, but an NPC with two attitudes is like a monster with an action point: a big fat hint. :)

"Don't press your luck with me, young'uns." Cantankerous says. "I'm the only source of work around here that doesn't involve manure or hoes!"
(Brutal Insinuation vs. the Reverend hits for 12 damage! The secondary attack fails against Ben.)

Dum is Angry (+10 vs. Intimidate)
Rev. McBlusterson is Not Happy
Ben is Calm (+10 vs. Bluff)
Cantankerous is Not Calm and Irate (+10 vs. Diplomacy) and insighted by Ben and Open
Joe is Irate (+10 vs. Diplomacy)

"Your turn Joe."

Cantankerous shouldn't be Open, since Insightful Repartee has the Effect: The target is no longer open.

Joe doesn't really know what's going on here. He knows that his highest skill is Intimidate, so he'll use that.

"Um, I use Rough Insinuation. My guy says, “These hedge mages are boring me. Let’s go find trouble.”

"Rolled a 12 plus 6 is 18 versus Morale Defence. Rolled a 4 on the d4 for damage, plus CHA mod that's 5. And I get a secondary attack, against Dee I guess. But I rolled a 5 plus 6 so that's 11; a miss, I bet."
