D&D 4E Reply if you love 4e

QFT. This is incredibly important. One of the most heartbreaking things I can remember when we started looking at the play test material was the need to look up things like the spells monsters could cast, rather than just having that at our fingertips.

It's a little easier now than it used to be -- searchable PDFs on my iPad rather than a stack of spellbooks to flip through -- but it's still a lot more unnecessary work for the DM to deal with.

Yeah its basically a deal breaker for me.

4e is the worst form of D&D ever and any sniff of it in 5e is a dealbreaker. Actually, its not even D&D. Actually, its just a boardgame. And a bad boardgame at that. The kind of bad, not D&D boardgame that is only your friend so it can mooch money off of you and hit on your sister. The kind of bad...

Oh sorry. Wrong thread.

4e is pretty great.

Actually while I'm not a fan of 4E as an RPG at all I DO own and like all of the Adventure Boardgames and feel that the modified 4E rules used in the boardgames are pretty good and fun.

So YAY 4E boardgame rules ?

Can't experience Manbearcat until I spread more experience. The best is people who actually believe this.

Yeah, but I don't feel they're scratching the same itch. I mostly turned my back on any kind of video games in favour of meeting more often with friends to play board games, card games or roleplaying games. It's sooo much better to meet with people in person instead of a virtual environment.

Sorry, I was ambiguous but meant online tools to play D&D games against other people. It still isn't the same as in person, though.

Agreed. It's also one of the reasons I started referring to it as D&D Previous: the stat block was just one are of devolution rather than evolution.

That bad huh? No wonder I love it so much. :)

(I can't give you XP either.)

Or, to paraphrase the late, great Winston Churchill, it's the worst form of D&D, except for all the others.

I've only ever DMed 4E. I used to be one of those guys who'd never ever DM, I thought it was a sacrifice some selfless all-knowing sage sent from the heavens had to make so the other players could have fun. 4E was the game that lifted the mystery veil of DMing for me, making me realize DMing in 4E is EASY and FUN. I sucked at first, sure, but I'll even go as far as considering myself a "good" DM these days.

I'm getting a new campaign ready right now. I'm doing as the "pushing the envelope" thread suggested, had this idea in my mind for a while: running a 4E old-school style campaign. Healing Surges are a perfect resource to deplete. This way, even a dumbed down encounter with 1 or 2 monsters can be taxing, and non-linear exploring becomes an interesting risk/reward endeavour. Throw in some dungeon dynamics, old-school monsters and have tools handy to generate encounters on the fly with zero railroading, and there you go.

With no shortage of options for PCs and DMs, and also seeing how easy it is to reskin and create your own monsters, I know I could play 4E until the day I die.

I've found a lot of flaws with 4e but even so it is my favorite edition of D&D. I'll probably harvest a couple bits and pieces from D&DPrevious but that's about it.

I love 4e, our 4e games go really well and I can run as many of them as I have time for. Actually right this minute I don't have an active game going for reasons having nothing to do with games, but I will restart at least one of mine in a few weeks when my schedule makes it feasible.

You live too far north. :.-(

Actually, I haven't been able to play 4E for almost 2 years. Starting with a new group tonight, but they are pretty far away (45 minutes one way). Hope it works out.
