I really wonder how they got their numbers. ;)

Maybe they thought: Hey, level 8 (dragon?) should be 4000xp. And someone said: oh that is way too much. Lets make it 3900xp, so we can add an extra hobgoblin minion, so that the dragn becomes realy dangerous with that martial advantage^^

The Young Green Dragon in the Starter Set is not in it's lair... maybe that's the difference? Being in it's lair gives a dragon extra "lair" or "legendary" actions, without which I assume there might be a small hit to the XP score.

I have a question for those who've already received the set:

Are there any guidelines for what to do if a PC dies during the adventure?

It's a reasonable possibility, given the low hp they start with and the swinginess of crits. In fact, Greg Bilsland mentions in the Phandelver play-through video that the Wizard died the previous time he ran it. I just wonder how they recommend handling potential replacement characters, given that there are only the five pregens (and all of them have backgrounds that are tied into the adventure in specific ways). It would be a touch weird if the archer died and another human archer showed up who had the exact same personality and burning desire to kill the Green Dragon (for example).
