It's totally possible they're just trying to lock down what the "core" tiefling looks like for branding purposes, but will release possible subraces and alterations with upcoming splat and campaign guides.

Same way a Dark Sun book would presumably have sections detailing what makes a cannibalistic DS halfling from a core Lightfoot, bald dwarves, etc, they could be saving the "Planescape" tiefling for a later book with extra fluff and subraces.

That was my first thought.

Since FR is the core now, and FR has 4e tieflings, it makes sense they went with the 4e tieflings. I'm sure the 2e tiefling will be available at some point as a variant.

Edit: By the way they did open up for horn appearance variations. All true 4e tieflings had the same style of horn. 5e's version is more varied.

Now the art itself, I believe that it looks a little unfinished.

The 4e tiefling. Note that his head is 98.2% horn:

Also he apparently has a dragon tail welded to his butt.

I would wager that there is either a part of the description or a sidebar about demonic tieflings. Given the amount of space they spend describing 30 different kinds of high elves across all their campaign worlds, I would be shocked if they just ignored pre-4e tieflings.

*sigh* Devil blooded only. Seriously?

That completely misses the point of the classic 2e and 3e tieflings, replacing them with something using their name but apparently based completely on the 4e creature from Evans' novel. That's a shame.
After I read that page, I knew you were going to be unhappy. I'm disappointed that the 4E tiefling seems to be the new default for the race. It will likely be the same for the Dragonborn.

You know, I, personally, don't care one wit about the tiefling story.

But I am sad for Shemeska. I know he cares.

Thaumaturge.

That's a major letdown having what seems to be only the 4e variety.

Ayup.

"And to twist the knife, tieflings know that this is because a pact struck generations ago infused the essence of Asmodeus -- overlord of the Nine Hells -- into their bloodline. Their appaerance and their nature are not their own fault but the result of an ancient sin, for which they and their children and their children's children will always be held accountable."

That's not the sub-race, that's the whole race.

Welp, I'm over it. Time to whip up my own statsnoise until the fun police come get me.

ALSO! Can I say how much I am skeeved out by that bit of fiction there? I don't know the book, maybe that's perfectly in context, it could easily be a "villain taunting the heroine and being really repellant" kind of scene. And it's good world illustration (and would work fine for a PS tiefling, too). But it doesn't make me want to play that character...man, that's a lot of context lost.

Art! Aside from it being 4e tiefling, I think it's good and fine. The look is just....argh.

I looked at this, then looked at the dwarf, then looked at this again. I can only guess different artist. Whether you like the choice of the type of Tiefling / origins, etc. or not, this is a VERY different style of art from what's been presented so far.
I have no strong feelings of Tieflings as a race or their origins but I am not a fan of this piece of art.
YMMV.
