Are there any character guidelines or backgrounds or anything of the sort? I won't be able to get the book for a couple of weeks, but I was thinking of getting character creation done in the meantime.
I said that as, by default, you can't just walk into a shop and buy a magic item. It is, as you say, up to the DM. As for the mod's generosity - how does it compare to the previous two storylines? I know a lot of people complained about there not being enough treasure in Tyranny of Dragons, though that was partly because they were still ironing out the nitty-gritty details of the rules. How much treasure does OotA have in comparison to HotDQ/RoT and PotA?There I completely agree. Really depends on the group and DM. As someone said above, loot doesn't matter because 'you can't buy magic items'. Says who? The DM will control that completely. But as the mod stands on it's own, the rewards are less generous than I would of thought for an adventure of this scale.
There's a one-page appendix with some alternate bonds and background features, just like the one in HotDQ. You can even download it for free from the WotC site. Also, the upcoming Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide was touted as being "compatible with the Rage of Demons storyline" in its announcement. Apparently that book isn't going to be allowed in the Adventurers League RoD season, though.
he's taking a week off to read OotA
Ditto this question. My DM is buying this, but we're third (almost fourth) level already. Are we looking at all new characters to run this or can we somehow get our PCs (and their magical gear) down there somehow?
Based on the "Encounters" version of the beginning, and the stack of magic item certificates.... there seems to be plenty of magic items. Now this is just based on my impression, I haven't done a mathematical assessment....
No, the only appendices in Out of the Abyss are Backgrounds (1 page of Features and Bonds), Magic Items, Creatures and Demon Lords.Does the adventure contain a section like Princes of the Apocalypse that tells you how to use the adventure in other settings like Greyhawk or Eberron?
