Boring, but: Fighter, Rogue, Wizard, in no particular order.

I like a lot of the other classes as well, but all three of these have really solid implementations in 5e that allow for quite a variety of character concepts.

I picked bard.

Seems to me bard can do a little bit of everything and is very effective at everything except direct damage combat, yet he even has options to be okay at that.
