Another thing to consider is that any class poll tends to be led by the Big 4. So the Wizard being on top, not a surprise - Tier 1, Big 4. That any of the Big 4 didn't make the top is an indication they're somehow lacking.

...

Those were popularity, not any sense of 'best,' though. Yeah, a lot of Beyonders roll up a Fighter named Bob at some point.

I play fighters regularly. I have yet to name one Bob, however. ;-)

I would point out fighters have been holding a steady 4th place on this poll even if rogues, clerics, and warlocks are close to them. The rest of the "big 4" traditional classes still represent. They just aren't part of the 3 break away classes we see.

I'm not surprised about wizards and bards up there. Versatility is valued and that they have.

But, Robert - and it's many diminutives, Bob, Bobby, Rob, Robby, Bert, and Robin (yes, really) - is among the most popular names in history! You're totally missing out.

And, while less versatile, the Paladin is quite the powerhouse at what it does.[/quote]

So how did the fighter make 4th best?

Big 4 popularity - really "most popular class" popularity.

When by far the most popular class comes in 4th, that's indicative of it being really quite bad at the thing being polled.
Which is perplexing, because the poll doesn't even try to define "Best." It should've been the Fighter's to lose.

I think it's less that - I think it's more a reflection of how people defined best.

Fighters and Paladins obviously are very good at damage. I think that's what's evaluating to best for a lot of people.

Wizards and Bards obviously have a lot of versatility. That's what's evaluating to best for a lot of others.

It is interesting to see full casters being consistently higher than non full casters.

I don't think bards are all that popular

So, what do I mean by the "best"? It doesn't matter. Whatever you consider it to mean, vote that way. Do you want DPR? Do you want most fun? Do you want most popular? Whatever! Vote for what the "best" would mean to you!!

Clearly the OP defined best. I.e., how it works for you. So unless you (general you) assume no one knows how to read, then it stands to reason the fighter is designed just fine for being #4 in the list of a dozen or so classes because that means at peoples' game tables, the fighter has many votes for being the best at what those people want fighter to do.

Disclaimers: The above does not mean in any way, shape, or form, that the fighter is perfectly designed, or can't use improvement, or that we can't criticize WoTC, etc. Just trying to head that off before the inevitable accusations come in.

I suspect they're a lot more popular among active members of this community than in the D&D community generally

I don't even think they are popular here. Advocating they are strong is a lot different than saying they are your favorite class.

*Note you meandered off the Op's definition of best and overrode it with your own definition of best - which at least for me is a definition I barely considered when answering the poll.
