We learned in December about Chris Pine's involvement, along with directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley.

haha, yes....

Avatar is awful,
you think the cannot make worse sci-fi movie,
Then they release Prometheus, and when you think that thing cant get any worse...here comes the Covenant
It's like they have a competition for making a biggest pile of "#$% for a movie.

I have no hope for this movie, and as we are now comparing with some sci-fi;
We are hoping for it to be like The Expanse, but we will probably get something like ST: D
Opinions vary. I couldn't get past the first episode of The Expanse, and despite some issues I really enjoy ST: Discovery.

Pine is a really good actor I think, and he's good at physical stuff and at comedy, which I would expect a D&D movie to have a nice sprinkling of. I don't expect it to be as serious as LOTR, for example, although I guess it could be.

The studio seems to be setting this movie up as a franchise. Combined with the TV series announcement this points to an approach similar to Disney with the MCU and Star Wars.

My hope is that these productions feel unique, rather than "Marvel but with swords". I think capturing the right tone will be tough - deadly serious but also silly; grounded but also weird?

Yeah, I wish folks would remember that their opinion isn't quite the same thing as established fact. The hyperbole of "this movie/TV show is absolute garbage" might reflect your opinion, but is unnecessary and just antagonizes folks who did enjoy the particular piece.

Oh well, folks trashing things they don't care for is nothing new, and not likely to change. Suffice to say I enjoyed most of the films and TV shows folks are mentioning as utter crap, and even the films/shows that I don't think are all that great . . . aren't all THAT bad either, including the D&D movie.

Count me in as a huge fan of both The Expanse and Star Trek: Discovery! Very different shows, but I love them both! My only complaint is that both current seasons have ended and I have to wait for more!

Honestly, the screenwriters (and DMs!) could do worse than to lift characters, plots and dialogue from Shakespeare whole cloth.

Heck, most D&D characters are more than halfway to Falstaff at any given time.
Quite so - and many good movies have done just that. And it's important to note that Shakespeare is funny. He even manages to slip comic interludes into the tragedies.

Yeah, it's okay, but suffers from focusing on Michael Sue rather than the ensemble. I've watched it all, but I prefer Picard.
Yes! She's the least interesting thing on that show, AFAIC - in part because they push her so hard to be the end-all, be-all. They've pulled back from that some in the 3rd season, thankfully. I don't mind a super-competent character, but the actor's delivery feels over-the-top earnest and like every single thing she says is the most important thing she's ever said. It's a very Shatner-like approach, really.

Is it safe to assume a D&D movie will take place in the Forgotten Realms?
