Right. Same for the Marvel universe - It's a juggernaut now, but Iron Man (I guess who can argue it started with The Hulk but Iron Man is the agreed starting point to the MCU) was far, far from a sure thing.

We're talking a C-D list superhero (Marvel couldn't use it's own A list heroes the movie rights weren't theirs!) and an actor who was, at best, thought of as unreliable. But they hit lightning in a bottle and well look at them now.

But that's going way ahead - here's to hoping they make a movie that's at least good!
Yeah, I remember thinking, "Iron Man?". I may have eventually seen it just for the action and special effects (which looked nice in the trailer) and expected a cheesy action flick. However, seeing that RDJ was playing Stark, I was sold on seeing it in the theater and taking it more seriously. Ever since I saw the movie Chaplain, I knew that RDJ had some serious acting chops and I'd watch this just for him. I wasn't disappointed, and I instantly became an MCU fan. I also remember being hesitent about the Captain America movie—I was afraid it was going to be utterly jingoistic. It became one of my favorire MCU movies (and Cap became my favorite MCU character).

I would say that until the first Avengers movie, it was not a sure thing. It would've been all too easy for the chemistry to just not work. For example, I can't imagine it having worked with Ed Norton as the Hulk, in an ensemble cast, with the extensive script control that's apparently in his contracts.

And then the success of Guardians of the Galaxy (a set of really weird characters that your average non-comics fan had no idea who they were) was what truly solidified the MCU as the cultural juggernaut it now is.

But yes, beyond just a franchise, they need to start with one good movie. I have hope that they can pull it off, and will reserve judgement until I see it. Or maybe at least the trailer...

Not recently prior to that. The only ones who were in recent big movies were Hugo Weaving and Liv Tyler (Matrix and Armageddon) to my knowledge. In LoTR, the main core actors, none of them had done anything major as an A list actor in big budget film for years prior to 2000. Ian did X Men right before LotR, but was doing LoTR work before the X men movie actually had made it big, and he wasn't considered an automatic A lister at that time he was cast in LoTR. Several great actors, sure, but none of them commanded automatic big budgets based on name only, which is what A listers do.
Lol are you serious? Christopher Lee is a film legend going back more than half a century.

I think they are probably looking at it from an American perspective. If you are British or at all familiar with their stage, tv and movie industry, Ian McKellen, Ian Holm and Christopher Lee, are all well known faces. Miranda Otto, Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchett, and David Wenham were well known to Australian/NZ audiences.

Here in the US, we mainly know Lee from all the B horror movies he made. And horror movies do not make any actor an A-lister. But those of us who can look at an entire body of work know better.
