I think the problem with flying for PCs is primarily a function of 5E not being a particularly granular system when it comes to modifiers based on actions. There isn't a penalty for shooting with a bow while running, for example, so does it make any sense to create such a penalty for flyers? Nor does 5E have a robust feat economy that would allow for a "tax" to get the most out of flying.

Under certain circumstances flying is very powerful but it's essentially useless in most interior encounter set pieces. GMs with flying PCs will have to think about three dimensions a lot more, though, and if it is too advantageous they will find themselves with full parties of flyers.

In name only.

D&D 3rd Edition, and now 5th Edition, share much more in common with AD&D (1E & 2E) than they do with BECMI D&D or "Basic" D&D. Although, of course, they've certainly evolved significantly since then.
BECMI shared a lot of similarities as well. In fact, when we started playing D&D we had both and didn't realize they were different games. We made characters with the boxed sets, referenced the DMG, and used creatures from the MM. They were basically the same game.

what I don’t like is a complete lack of limitations in all of this. It’s all too wispy, airy ungrounded.

I know some games don’t worry about ammunition or resources much either. I like some of these hassles and limitations to help ground things. Same with ASIs and other “hassles” that a lot of people are done with these days.

choose your race or species bonus don’t sweat the details...just get deep into “telling your story” is the r new hotness. It’s the way things are going.

I assume it’s driven by demand but the style no longer appeals to me.

rabbits that sneak around and wear leather armor? That sounds fun. I don’t think it’s always the content that turns me off newer things I think it’s the lack of boundaries to test or challenges to navigate.

I like options. I think there is value in them. I don’t think they should all be standard and assumed to be together.
Folks will say this won’t happen unless you choose it but I disagree.

The new zeitgeist is player driven to the extent that boundaries are just headaches for people. I think some of these ideas are fun but in a mos eisley cantina appeal a lot less.

a fey campaign might be a trip though! I would buy a fey campaign book.

Well said, all of this, especially the bold.

I think it’s not just rules differences but more goals differences. I like a more challenge based game with role played characters.

increasingly it seems the preference is “tell your story” with some incidental challenges.

subtle but I think impactful in informing preferences. I also think emergent play benefits from more grounding too. We have had adventures as fugitives just trying to resupply for example.

the limitations were not a story barrier: they became the story. Conversely if my goal is to RP the tragic internal conflict of my PC I could see how this, ASIs or other things just get in the way.

min short, I can see how I would use some of this fey stuff but I would make it a bit more restricted and bounded to fit my groups play style and priorities for sure vs. just adding them as more preapproved game options.
