D&D 5E What the fragmentation of D&D canon means for MtG

If they do what do you think is the best way to do it?
Well, personally I think it would be better to not do it, and like I said I don’t think they have actual plans to, they just want to make sure if they decide later on that they want to, they still can. If they did, I think the best thing to do would be to do another set in a D&D world and tie it in to whatever’s going on in the MtG plot at the time. Phyrexians invade Toril or something. Then announce that, now that D&D crossover is becoming canon, AFR is retroactively canon too.

Like I said though, I don’t think they’re planning to, and I would prefer they don’t.

I don't think they are worried about this at all.

Yeah. Using styling and IP between games seems like low-hanging fruit they'd be dumb to pass up.

Having a unified canon between the games is simply unnecessary, unless you want GAMEPLAY of the two to be related. Especially when gameplay of either game is not strongly dependent on the canon of either game.

And all this is assuming the canon changes are recent and make any difference in how WotC views the brand cross over. All they've said about it until now points to the changes in canon starting with the beggining of 5e... way before there was even discussion of a cross over

Gaming is fun, and fun is for everyone

Yeah, they seem pretty happy with the handwaving away of how these crossovers work.

The separate teams seem well aware that too much crossover, like Mordenkainen meeting Chandra, is more likely to be unpopular than popular. At the same time, they know that MTG Setting books, or D&D Magic Cards, are likely to sell well. So they say "Oh, that cardset is non-canon," or "Oh, that Setting doesn't interact with the Great Wheel."

For the most part, folks don't seem to care too much; the folks who want more crossover do it themselves in their home-games, and the folks who want less can point to WotC statements saying that crossovers are non-canon.

It's a weird limbo between two worlds, but it's unlikely to ever change from this much.

I mean, all they really have to do is not put MtG stuff into official D&D adventures and fiction.

It's a good thing that it's not fragmentation of the FR cannon, otherwise it's 10d6 fire + 10d6 slashing to everyone within a 50 foot radius.
