While reprinted, these races have all been updated to the current standard used by WotC for D&D races used in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, including a free choice of ability score increases (increase one by 2 points and another by 1 point; or increase three by 1 point), and small races not suffering a movement speed penalty.

I think this cements me waiting until 6th edition before I purchased more D&D products. I don't like that my PHB has different rules from multiple releases since then regarding races and whatnot.

Then the only reason they're marketing it now is because they want to manipulate people into buying an overpriced gift set because we don't know when it will be available on its own. This whole thing is very bad form, imo.

Agreed. WotC knows its fanbase. They know a lot of their fans can be a bit...obsessive and completionist. There's also a strong desire to get all the latest books for all the cool new widgets. Packaging the book like this is manipulative.

All the completionists and people who want all the new stuff now are. They either buy this now or they don't have a complete set and miss out on all the new stuff until some later date. That WotC hasn't announced the later date is clearly manipulative of its costumer base.

Not really. The Box Set is mainly for people that don't have all the books in it.

It's a D&D product released to a fanbase of completionists and people always scrambling for the latest and greatest toys in the game. It's mainly for people with money who're fans of D&D. WotC doesn't care if people buy the same books multiple times. Quite the opposite in fact. They directly benefit from people buying multiple copies. Hence the collector covers. Multiple DM packs. The now two gift sets. Etc.

If they wanted to do that, they wouldn't have told us that the book would be available on its own later.

They announced it as a separate release so that fans wouldn't be up in arms about the packaging decision. Imagine the outrage if this book were only ever available in this gift set. This way WotC also gets multiple sales of MotM along with repeat sales of XGE and TCE.

I know 50Ae isn't coming out till 2024, and that WotC has a bunch of stuff planned for this year and next year, but this gift set reminds me of the various "end of line" wrap-up compilation series that previous editions got. Think 3.5e's Magic Item Compendium and Spell Compendium and 4e's Rules Compendium (and the various other books in that smaller paperback format).

Yeah, given 5e's popularity, they're really trying to make people believe that this isnt a new edition coming, but for all intents and purposes (other than optics) it is.

This is going to be an item that is worth getting for those who don't have the previous books. For the rest of us, I think it can be more or less ignored.

It has only minor changes which aren't going to change the game, unless someone is a RAW cultist but that's their own problem.

If you already have either the MtoF or VGtM book, it is still more valuable for your game to buy the other book rather than buying MotM.

Same with me and I was just going to say the same thing. Think I'll pass on this and probably most of what comes up until 5.5E and I'm probably better off waiting for 6E. I get the feeling that besides more mega-adventures, a few updated settings and maybe a rules expansion, (all of which will probably have a relative short shelf life if you switch to 6E), it's not worth the money or time and effort for me or my players. Just come out and say it, 5.5 is just to bide time to develop 6E which I'm sure they are working on as I type this.

I know they do this every time, but pretending 5e Essentials is anything less than that is getting tiresome. A good thing they have so many new fans that are just getting on this merry-go-round.
