While reprinted, these races have all been updated to the current standard used by WotC for D&D races used in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, including a free choice of ability score increases (increase one by 2 points and another by 1 point; or increase three by 1 point), and small races not suffering a movement speed penalty.

The video below from Nerd Immersion delves into the races in more detail.

They aren't trying to "screw" completionists, they are trying to help people new to the game, who are more numerous at any rate.
The ultimate irony of course being that probably most of the people that are annoyed that they can't buy the book by itself this very minute are the same people that probably are going complain about all the changes the book brings. LOL.

If you just pretend like this book doesn't actually exist, you don't have to be concerned about either of those two things.

If that were the case, wouldn't they release it simultaneously as a stand alone?
Because they already have Volo's and Mordenkainen's out: this was clearly conceived as a way to make a gift box affordable with three books instead of four. Iterating their latest rules is a bonus, and maybe a hook to get some people who already have the other books. But the primary audience is people who don't have Volo's or Mordenkainen's, not forumites.

Aarakocra fly at 30ft.

All races move at least 30ft.

No more subraces.

Light sensitivity removed.
Yet more legacies of the game being destroyed. Let's give everyone goodies, no drawbacks/penalties/etc. despite it making perfect sense (please explain how a halfling has the same stride as a human...? Or why eyes adjust perfectly fine despite being a pure underground race?)

Everything the same as the rest.

So exactly what makes anything distinct in D&D anymore? It's all cardboard copies of each other now.

Jeez this game is falling apart. And the rookies who don't know better eat it up cause cash is all the company cares about.

Missing the TSR days more and more

I mean, I have books with all of this stuff in them, and I'm not not that concerned about the updates. And I am a completionist!

"Probably because like light sensitivity, they're removing unnecessary penalties that punish the player for playing the PC with no mechanical compensation."

Why does all balancing have to be additive? There's nothing wrong with penalties!
There ARE penalties. Some races get 120' of Darkvision. Other races only get 60' of Darkvision and are being penalized. Some races don't get Darkvision AT ALL and are being penalized the most.

But of course that means actually putting a little effort into it and looking at the game through a certain lens. And that's a little more difficult than just looking around for negative numbers or the word 'Disadvantage' and being satisfied that your need for penalties is presented to you in the most obvious fashion.
