Is it really any more inflammatory than any of the other off hand comments people make about D&D - "linear fighters, quadratic wizards", "murder hoboes", and a host of other snarky jabs?
I mean if someone felt that firing off the big powers and spamming the at wills was similar to how they experienced a video game, or the slow and relatively weak development of power felt a bit like City of Heroes, or even that the Cloud Jump rogue utility exploit was literally a double jump - were they wrong?

were they wrong to feel that way? No, no feeling is wrong.
were they wrong to express this feeling as an opinion? not really, although in general being nice is better then being rude when expressing your feeling (lord knows I am not perfect with this)
were they wrong if they express, double down on and claim there feeling/opion/style is a cold out right fact? YES... 100% wrong

But were they doing so? This is a frequent issue on message boards in the first place, not just with edition bashing posts. Lots of posts get read as they were asserting fact when they're asserting opinions and judgments. And the more emotional people get, the more they attribute bad motives to the people on the other side of the issue - such as asserting their opinions as facts rather than just vociferously (even rudely) reasserting their opinions.
yes... even when confronted they fell back on "its just the facts" and "I don't care about excuses just facts"
yup, and when confronted that is SUPER easy to desscalate, by saying "Yeah okay we don't know I just feel like for me..."
in this case multi post HE used the word facts

I do think it's safe to say that D&D 5E and Critical Role are in a symbiotic relationship, where neither would be as popular as they are without the existence of the other.
As much as I loved the potential of 4E (and running it was so easy compared to 3.X), I don't think Critical Role would have been nearly as successful if they stuck with D&D 4E or Pathfinder. I am really curious to see how things would have gone if they had used 13th Age or a different fantasy system.
Honestly, I'd love to see either Critical Role or Dimension 20 do some non-5E stuff, but they know where their bread is buttered, and I can't fault them for that.

Crit Role does do other stuff. They've done Deadlands, the Doom Game, Monster High and whatever Honey Heist was based on at the very least.
