D&D General How do players feel about DM fudging?

I often play games like Pandemic, Gloomhaven, or Forbidden Island with my kids. Often, we fail the game. We all still have fun and play again.

Hey that's great, whatever floats your boat. Next step is to learn that not everyone likes to play the same way you and your friends like to play, and there's nothing wrong with that.

My experience over 40+ years of RPGs is...

...different from my 35+ years of RPGs. Not sure what that brings to the table exactly.

All of these point out or come back to one thing to me. DMs thinking they know best. Thinking they know what their players want, and assuming that if/when they fudge the players don't know about it.

What about the part where I talk to them about it?

It might be better if we didn't choose to judge people based on how they like to play recreational games with their friends.

There are healthily and unhealthy behaviors. Regardless of if it is exhibited playing RPGs or not. But tis is not the forum to discuss such. Besides though Lanefan's statement has a touch of ... evaluation to it, I wouldn't be overly concerned that it is judgemental.

Just...what is the point of these kinds of responses? Why come white-knighting into forums on behalf of some group that's supposedly being maligned, just to say the same thing, over and over again, some version of "People like what they like," "Everyone's different," "Don't tell other people how to play," etc.

The point of nearly every thread is to express opinions. So why is it that any time someone shares an opinion that's specific--a specific preference, for example--there's this pointless, knee-jerk, defensive response?

For the last time: Anyone can do anything they want to do!

But if that's your only take, we get it. There's truly no need to keep repeating such a baseline axiom of human interaction.

No such assumption was made. There are many ways to act while considering the players - fudging is only one such possibility. Nothing in my post suggested otherwise.

Yes. You said you did. But I never said you didn't. I said earlier why it usually doesn't work, in my experience. I'm glad you are able to surpass the shortcoming that many of us have experienced. I replied why ime it often does not work. And why DMs should be considerate that their assumptions may not be correct. Perhaps you are saying since you have perfected this part of DMing that no one else struggles with it and their experiences are invalid? Or that DMs should not bother to consider how their actions may be perceived by their players in a different manner?

ENWorld is not a contact sport. There is no 'tude except that which you ass-u-me. There is no fire and brimstone and if you don't wish people to tag you, then don't participate in the CONVERSATION. It's only a conversation, if you can not partake politely and respectfully, then you should let us all know that so we can ignore you.
