Honestly, that's not that useful IMO. Weapons with a damage range of 1-12 are already starting to get swingy because you have an equal chance of rolling a 1 or a 12, and that tends to make them a bit unreliable, where a 2d6 tends towards 7 rather than the extremes, and you can't roll a 1. That's going to get worse the more sides you add to a die. So a 2d8 or 3d6 generally tends to be a little better for increasing damage even if you're more likely to hit the averages.
I think I’d be ok with a d14 for an average weapon and 2d7 for a good weapon.

From a lore perspective, you could justify it by saying that the weapon is an Exotic one.

What would the d14 d16 and d18 be for? The d12 barely gets play as is.

I'm still waiting for the 2nd d12 HD class and weapon.

Super Tanky Warden when?

Honestly, that's just justifying the use of an uncommon die. 1d14 or 2d7, either way you're using an uncommon die type.

And like @Minigiant said, the d12 doesn't get a lot of use, and it's one of the common dice. That's just going to be worse with weird dice.

I was more trying to differentiate why you would want to have both 1 HD and 2. Those numbers were just the first ones that came to my head.

Let’s say 1d12 versus 2d6 instead then.

A purpose I could see it useful for would be a feature that lets you bump up weapon damage a die-grade or two. So for example a d12 weapon could be bumped up to a d14 or a d16 as an example.
That's one of the few places where I can see the value in these dice - I like the idea that Fighters (and, to a less extent, Barbarians) could boost the dice type of weapons they use. I also don't like the fact that in 5e almost everyone starts with the "best" equipment for their class - I tend to think there should be scope to purchase upgrades, and an expanded dice range would allow for that. (And I tend to think the swinginess here is a feature, not a bug, but YMMV.)

That said, it's not enough to overcome my aversion to adding yet more dice to the set. If anything, I'd seek to remove the d10 (but not d%) from the game.

For game systems where you step up and step down dice, I can see a definite usage for the d14, d16, and d18. But that's never been part of D&D.

Plus part of D&D is the low barrier to entry for new hobbyists. Plentiful players, dice available even at Target/Walmart/Dollar Store, free basic rules online, etc. Suddenly upsetting the dice needed would be a huge hit there. Plus all of my players would need new dice. And all of the dice manufacturers would need new molds if they wanted to keep putting out complete sets. My kids do resin dice, they would need additional molds, etc.

Would not be a fan of D&D 6e doing that.
