But it's looking like our next game will rather be non-fantasy. Likely candidates are:
  • Vaesen
  • Call of Cthulhu/Pulp Cthulhu

I have wanted to run Pulp Cthulhu for YEARS now! There is a massive adventure path called The Two Headed Serpent that looks absolutely balls to the wall insane. The only problem is that I play exclusively on Roll20 now and I would have to import everything, so it would be quite a lot of work. I ran the Complete Masks of Nyarlathotep long ago mixed with D20 Modern, so I have already done a "pulp" campaign, but it was one of the best modules I ever had the pleasure running, so yes, I am definitely in the CoC camp.

Looks like I'll be going all-in on GUMSHOE this year, especially now there's Swords of the Serpentine to scratch any fantasy itch. The nice thing is that this current controversy looks to have saved me the likely disappointment of buying the new Planescape material I've been wishing for for so long.

@Nebulous The discussion around this in our group is still open, but the Two-headed Serpent and Masks of Nyarlathotep are exactly the two campaigns I have in mind for that. We're using Owlbear Rodeo (and Discord), though, so there will be manual preparation effort in both cases.

You can't go wrong with Masks. Which version are you using? They came out with a truly massive, massive expansion version of Masks a few years ago. If interested, you can read the recap on my blog here:

This is the new revised edition. I would use this one if I ran it again, but I don't have time to invest a couple years into the same story, so I would personally go with Serpent for Pulp Cthulhu.

Both our current GM and I have the German translation of the revised version (publish by Pegasus Spiele). If we go with Masks, we'll probably go with that one (he also owns the old version, but we have digital handouts for the new version, which would simplify things). However, as you say, Masks is pretty massive, so the chances we go for ThS are bigger (another campaign that died due to outside circumstances reminded us that it's better to limit the scope of campaigns to something that can be finished in 1-1.5 years).

I had already jumped off in favor of Swords and Wizardry and Old School Essentials. I can still run those but it will be bitter if all new support is gone and ability to buy new books is gone. I gave my 5e stuff away a while back and nothing I saw from 6e made me think I needed to play that. I prefer older game styles and it will suck to see all the people who have been working to make those old style a presence in the market today get hammered by Big Gaming. If this all shakes out like it seems it will I will not support anything Hasbro related in the future including movies, TV shows, etc.

I'll be continuing with Pathfinder 2 campaigns that are already in flight.

Any new games (especially if I get to play rather than GM) that are FRPG will follow OSR sensibilities: ACKS, Castles & Crusades, or OSE.

Just go with the system Traveller came up with.

Cepheus can do sword and sorcery, sci-fi, and anything else. Just needs some d6s. Simple, fun, and legacy setting free. Make up or import and convert your existing stuff, and have fun. Simple, fun, relatively fast, and collegial.

I dig it, but folks who like that level 1-20 D&D experience tend to have trouble with it.
