We could fix a lot of these problem threads just by saying, flat out, when people are arguing in bad faith.
Is arguing in bad faith always a bad thing?

I've always saw it as the first step in considering a different point of view. The fact someone is at least polite enough to pretend to listen to what I say is still better than just ignoring me, haha.

Unless I'm completely missing what arguing in bad faith entails. :)

You are describing good faith.

Bad faith is going through all of that with no intention of having an open mind and considering what you hear in response.

I guess when I engage people online, I kind of expect them to not take my opinion seriously if it runs contrary to their own. To me, that's just kinda' how people work, especially as they get older and their beliefs get more solidified.

Even if they have no intention of considering my opinion, I think pretending is still a pretty polite first step, haha. It at least gets a discussion going.

But seriously, we can switch analogies. But if they're too often too obviously referring to certain sides in threads we'll get shut down. And if this thread becomes the home of actual serious topics that continue beyond a few posts, then it runs either the risk of doing that too or of not being a hopefully comfortable place for a lot of different folks to come and vent.
