I've always saw it as the first step in considering a different point of view. The fact someone is at least polite enough to pretend to listen to what I say is still better than just ignoring me, haha.

I guess when I engage people online, I kind of expect them to not take my opinion seriously if it runs contrary to their own. To me, that's just kinda' how people work, especially as they get older and their beliefs get more solidified.You are describing good faith.
Bad faith is going through all of that with no intention of having an open mind and considering what you hear in response.
Until this thread existed I never knew that food analogies could be stretched to a breaking point and then further.
