D&D Movie/TV D&D Movie Hit or Flop?

Looking at just the box office numbers (I look st box office mojo), dnd movie is at 194M$.

Mario has passed 1B$ surpassing 2022's 3rd biggest movie, Jurassic World Dominion, a bit far away from catching up to 2022's second biggest movie, Top Gun, which had 1.5B$ at the box office.

2022 was the pandemic, a lot less viewers for movies. I'd be surprised if HAT were the 3rd biggest movie this year, despite beating last year's 3rd place. Heck, it is not even the 3rd biggest movie of 2023 today...

HAT won't come anywhere near 3rd place, that comparison was between Mario and 2022 movies, hence the second paragraph.

HAT is currently in 5th place for 2023 last I checked, but I don't expect it to stay there. Guardians 3 will easily surpass it. Not sure what other movies are coming out though which might also surpass it.

At minimum I expect GotG 3, Fast X, The Little Mermaid, Transformers, The Flash, Indiana Jones, Mission Impossible, Oppenheimer, maybe Barbie, maybe Haunted Mansion, Dune 2, the Marvel's, Hunger Games, Aquaman and maybe Ghostbusters to hit $200 million or more this year, beating DnD at the box office. There are others I'm not sure about and I could be wrong about some of these but this year is stacked with movies.

This was a great way to point out how crowded the movie calendar is these days

Now it is 194M$ in the box office. It shouldn't a bad cipher when the main rival is breaking records.

So no Bluray/DVD Box with Dice? I'd they continue like this they will never make money.

For whatever reason this popped up in my mind, but the director of the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot (which had a similar budget as the D&D movie, around $150 million) made a comment on what that movie had to make at the box office to break even in an article:

"As opening day approaches, Feig can’t help but think about the stakes of making a $150 million movie. “A movie like this has to at least get to like $500 million worldwide, and that’s probably low,” he says."

$500 million is a lowball estimate for how much a $150 million blockbuster needs to make.

Sony did eventually decide to make another Ghostbusters movie, but Ghostbusters Afterlife was a much lower budget film (only $75 million) and tried making a direct sequel to the original 2 films instead of a remake. Sony also owns the Ghostbusters franchise and stands to make money off of merchandise sales, unlike the D&D movie where only one of the production companies gets merchandise sales.
