Door to Nowhere

Taylar takes a good look around to see if anyone has noticed them and if there any guards or other visitors in the sleeping tent.
Taylar motions his companions to come close and whispers in Maldrog, "If it were just us against the Evipaun I would fall on them now with our weapons and leave one alive to tell us where the children are. Our problem is the Pelimonra. However we act, we must do so in a way that does not call down suspicion or violence on us. I think we cannot manipulate waylines or our hosts will sense it. I would like to cause an incident with those oil lamps and burn those Evipaun villains where they lie. Here is my plan, we lay down and act like any other sleepers for an hour or so, then when we are sure not to be spotted or suspected, we spill some oil on those drunkards and light them up. We should act to help save any others, including at least one of the Evipaun, but make sure they are burned so that they will need medical care but can still answer our questions. Then we can interrogate them later when they are vulnerable. What are your thoughts?"

"I think there's no need to hurry so much, as we almost have them. It seems they just sold a younglings, celebrated this and will soon head to get a new ones. Hopefully this morning. if not, we better keep eyes on them until they leave non-violence area. Making fire could get out of control, cause innocent victims, put us in troubles and other horrible consequences we can't predict."

Plumeir listens to the plan of Taylar and nods after the cautionary comment from Astarte. "Fire may be what they deserve but we should, as cautioned, probably wait to exact some measure of revenge. At this point, I see us a a dividing decision. We can either follow the Evipaun out in the morning, as I suspect they will be leaving as well, or forget them and look for the children. I cannot see that we will be able to do both. My vote is that we eliminate this source of the problem, then focus on trying to find where the children have gone."

As the party mulls over the original suggestion, they notice a few more things than when they had entered. There are several pairs of Pelimonra guards within the tent. All of their eyes reflect light like those of an animal would, indicating that they have improved night vision. Several random people within the tent who are not yet sleeping can also see in the dark. The supposed oil lamps are also recognized as being fake and mystically illuminated. As the Evipaun adjust the pillows where they are intending to sleep, several of them can also, apparently see in the dark, though they do not appear to be Benders.

The kidnappers simply lay down and go to sleep. The next morning, early, they all rise, showing no signs of having consumed too much alcohol from the night before, arrange their supplies and head for a tent flap to leave.

Taylar says to the Investigators in Maldrog, "Agreed. We will not allow these villains to continue their foul deeds. We must rest too or we will have no strength to bring down our targets. I propose that we sleep in shifts since it does not take more than one to watch these kidnappers. I offer to take first watch. If any see these Evipaun leave, we alert the others and follow to attack at our best opportunity. I have no words to speak to them."

Anticipation and anxiety prevented the three Investigators from getting much sleep, but the three were all healthy and fit, and one day without decent sleep was not going to negatively affect their abilities to function. Appearing nonchalant and intent upon their own supposed business, the three efficiently gather their own supplies and ready themselves for departure, holding themselves to a count so as to not immediately appear to be tailing the Evipaun.

Once outside of the tent, the morning light is not yet bright enough to warrant a delay to allow vision to adjust from the dimness of the exited tent. Each person, taking a deep breath and looking about, can see that the Evipaun do indeed appear to be leaving the valley. They are deliberately walking straight across the sand toward the northern spire that marks the boundary controlled by the Pelimonrae. Once west of that spire, no one would be trying to limit, much less control, the actions of anyone seeking or finding conflict.

The kidnappers walk with purpose but stop as they reach the spire. The haze that hinders distance vision during the day is not as pronounced this early in the morning. At first thought, the Evipaun could possibly be motivated by some means of cowardice, but this is far from accurate. With the absence of landmarks out in the sand, the kidnappers are orienting themselves. The pause was very temporary. They begin walking again, moving in a straight line, north by northwest. It makes no sense that they would walk toward seemingly nothing. There must be something off in the distance that they know of but cannot, yet, be seen.
