Garin intends to sling his away, once more hoping to electrocute it. Belaria and Gaio who had both avoided their spiders while negating the venom, prepare for them to jump again. Both hope to corrode catch them this time and corrode their insides. Brenda realizes that she cannot help her friends and is probably going to succumb to the venom.

As Brock slams his spider on the ground. Its body does not break open but the beast stops moving. The added mystical heat kills it. Unfortunately, the venom already coursing through Brock’s veins further weakens him. Garindell slings the spider away, once more, but it hits the wall with little force. Although instead of landing on its feet, its body starts convulsing until it dies. Like with Brock, the venom already in Garindell causes him to become paralyzed.

Neither Belaria nor Gaio is able to catch the spider that jumps at each, but both avoid being bitten, again. Belaria suddenly realizes that she can affect the spider just by sheer will alone. She no longer has to be touching it. That spider lays on the ground and twitches, unable to right itself. Gaio has no such talent. Brenda is further weakened by the venom but is not yet paralyzed. The only spider still able to function, the one who had jumped at Gaio, decides to leave for easier prey. It quickly exits the room, walking along the wall instead of the floor.

Brock waves his hand in a dismissive gesture before pressing it against his bite. “Good riddance. Let it go. We are in no shape to give chase.” He looks down at his best friend, feeling the effects of his own venom. “Stick, you are laying down on the job. I think I am about to join you.”

Brenda sits down, knowing that she is about to fall. Belaria and Gaio will negate the venom in their friends then see what else may be done for everyone. Belaria exclaims, “This is terrible. We are getting nowhere. I hate spiders! I hate spiders.”

Since Garindell is already paralyzed, Belaria helps Brock, and Gaio helps Brenda, preventing both from becoming paralyzed. Once again, Garindell is carried and the party moves back to the ladder they used to enter the pyramid so that they will be in the sunlight. Fully resolved to the fact that the party is not making much progress in exploring the ruin, the same process of duty exchange is used until Garin can climb out, and the spiders are retrieved for food back at the same campsite as before.

Extremely frustrated about being ambushed by spiders twice, the next day the party members intends to be be more proactive in their return. Brock exclaims, “What, has this place been abandoned for so long that it is now a house for bugs!?”

Garin shakes his head. “It seems we are ill prepared for even such mundane threats.”

Belaria waves her hands. She is overly demonstrative but normally has a positive attitude. “Okay, okay, we are going back in, but we are going to be more prepared. I do not know how, but we must.”

Gaio shrugs. Garin lifts his left hand in a halting gesture. “I have an idea. before we move into an unknown room, we should throw a couple of the lighted stones into it. If the light does not cause dark dwelling creatures to react, it wil, at least, allow us to look before we leap.”

Returning to the area of the pyramid that has already been visited, twice, is now simply a matter of routine. Understanding how the pattern of rooms and halls were built at that level, the party moves in the direction of where they expect to find the next room. The prediction is correct. The room is located where it is expected, leaving only one other room at this level that is yet to be explored.

Several strides away in the hall, two of the illuminated stones are tossed into the room. The occupants of the dark room find the intrusion to be offensive and begin moving about, allowing the party to recognize them. It seems each of the rooms has been occupied by a female hunting spider who then has several male consorts. Two female spiders would fight each other for territory, so only one occupies each space. Female spiders are larger and dominant over male spiders.

Before attempting to move forward, two more lighted stones are tossed into the room to make it even easier to see. Since Garindell, Belaria, and Brenda can now mystically assault a target without having to touch it, the party does not move into the room but remains at the opening. Brock and Gaio kneel in front of the party, readying to defend, so that the others can better target the spiders and possibly be initially protected. Garindell utilizes shock, Belaria corrosion, and Brenda heat. Catching ahold of Gaio’s arms so that both kneel at the same instant, Brock says, “Now!”

Before any spider feels compelled to launch itself at a party member, Brenda incapacitates one by heating it. As the spiders move instinctively to attack the warm blooded creatures, the party members, Belaria acts next to corrode the insides of one enough to incapacitate it. At about the same instant as the spiders attempt to crowd into the hall to get at the party, Garindell releases a visible, yet pale blue, bolt of lightning. He, too, incapacitates a spider.

Gaio stands to catch one of the two remaining spiders that launches itself into the hall but is unable to take advantage of his speed. The last spider lands on Brock. Each of the two young men is bitten but is unable to hurt the spider. While the bite is merely irritating, the venom weakens Brock and weakens and further harms Gaio. Within another five seconds, Gaio negates the venom within himself and the party members kill the other two spiders. Brock will still need help for he lacks the talent to negate the venom on his own.

Belaria and Gaio negate the venom within Brock, help aid his recovery, then Belaria aids Gaio. Brock looks at Gaio and says, “I really feel like continuing to that fourth room we know is there. You feeling up to it?”

Gaio agreed. “We should employ the same tactics.”

Belaria said, “Let us make sure these spiders are dead and carry the carcasses with us. If this next room is the same, we can go back out and have a good meal before we explore further.”

The venom still coursing through the veins of Brock is instantly negated, but the healing process for him and Gaio will take longer. They are not recovered by the time the party reaches the next room to employ the same tactics as before. The lighted stones reveal that this room is also occupied as expected, more spiders.

The carcasses of the other spiders are dropped as the party members prepare for the impending attack. Even though Brock and Gaio are still hurt, they seem undeterred to take their positions to protect the party’s benders.
