That's what they're kind of doing with half-feats, no?

Mostly yes.

I think I would like them to decouple a little more. Physical feats get Str or Dex or Con; Mental style feats get Int or Wis or Cha. Right now there are a few feats where it is "Oh, this would be nice for this character, but it gives the wrong ASIs"

that is why all feats need to come with +1 ASI of choice.

with option to take 2 half-feats without and ASIs

Or better: if you can choose whatever you want, just make feats wothout ASI and give a +1 ASI everytime a character reaches an ASI level. And have a +1 ASI feat (or better a +1/+1 ASI feat). That way, level 1 feats are still relevant later.
And fighting style feats are also worth taking if you get +1 ASI.

these UA 1st level feats are little tricky,
some are half feats, some are little more(3/4th??), none are worth a full feat, and some are just terrible.

we need another UA with all feats thrown in to see what is what.

You can easily houserule that. I'm not saying that I'd not like to see it (I'm with you) but if they don't go for it, I'd probably allow it anyhow. Another way to look at it is to look at it the same as you (probably should) do with Backgrounds: A Background gives you your ASIs, a tool, a language, and a Feat. But you can also build a "Custom Background". This essentially means that you can take any given background as your base, and just change any one thing. The +1, say, or the feat that it grants (certainly no one would care if you change the language!).

So, with feats, you could easily (barely a homebrew at all!) say that the feat's +1 is just a suggestion. Athlete gives +1 STR ("or another Ability of your choice"). Should you have a story reason as to WHY yours is different? I think you should. But I don't see why you can't change it.

I've been building characters that often take PT1's "level 1" feats at Level 4. With an ASI. (And occasionally vice-versa WITHOUT the ASI). It's not broken.

That would be nice, in particular as some of those feats can't possibly work the same way as they're written due to other changes. And they seem to have changed to some kind of "background" keyword over doing levelled feats, so I'd like to see what THAT means.

the new bonus action rules even give an answer to what a monk can do that a scimitar and shortsword fighter can't; they can use the Defense action and make an attack (with their bonus action) on the same turn, giving them more survivability when they chose.
I hadn't thought of this use, but I like it. I love the varies defensive options the monk has now, even if it is a bit hard to grasp for a beginner.
  1. Use your Bonus Action to dodge (costs 1 dp) and your Action to attack. This si the low-level option.
  2. Use your Action to Dodge and attack with bonus action only. Past level 10, this option is actually more aggressive.
The monk has always been squishy, but no you can be tanky by giving up some but not all offense. I quite like it.

Oh yeah, I love that the bonus action unarmed attack doesn't depend on the Attack action any more. It's not a big difference on most turns, but it just gives you so much more room to play around in.
If the monk ever gets a debuff that prevents them taking an Action, but not a Bonus Action, or only letting them take ether an Action or a Bonus Action, this is really helpful.
