As people have pointed out, the reason for the 2014 half elf being a boring bunch of nothing, is because 2014 humans were practically not a playable species. At least with half orcs they gave them a unique feature to make up for it.Again, the difference between a 2024 half elf and a 2014 half elf mechanically is two skills
then IMPROVE the half-elf mechanical distinction, don't DELETE itMechanics matter to you. Who are the “some people “?

Rather than deleting humans as a playable species, they actually went and made them interesting in 5.5e. Which would be no different to making half elves mechanically interesting.
Inspiration on long rest + prog in a skill + a 1st level feat.Because the updated human is so different? Yay you get advantage on a die roll once per long rest. Because nothing says human like a bit of luck?
That’s your bar for interesting?
Yeah, again I’m really not seeing the need for this level of angst.
If anything has to go to make room for new stuff though, half elf kind of is the easy option. We already have humans, we already have elves, the two of them mxied together shouldn't be taking up the same real estate as "Popular fantasy archetype, the orc" or "Dragon person"then IMPROVE the half-elf mechanical distinction, don't DELETE it
The new Human gets two Feats at first instead of one, which opens up some interesting possibilities not available to any other Species.Because the updated human is so different? Yay you get advantage on a die roll once per long rest. Because nothing says human like a bit of luck?

The standard Human got three ASIs instead of one and a half plus some abiities that equal a Feat and a Half, which makes them equal to the other options.Inspiration on long rest + prog in a skill + a 1st level feat.
vs
A language choice (which everyone gets in tashas onwards), and ASI (moved to background).
Are you seriously suggesting there is no difference there?
thb i'm with you there. I'd rather have orc, goliath, and aasimar than half-elf and half-orc in the PHB.If anything has to go to make room for new stuff though, half elf kind of is the easy option. But I'm against the outright removal of those two species and the insinuation that deleting them directly adds more content. WotC is so far going through deleting existing hybrid characters from lore too, not just mechanically, like them even existing is somehow racist.
