What's your basis for that claim? I sell D&D books for a living, and I wasn't aware that Monsters of the Multiverse sold particularly poorly, as you say. Is it just that you didn't buy it? That's okay, but I don't think you can extrapolate much from it.
I am admittedly ignorant on sales numbers, thus my particular choice of words. But you may have some numbers you could share given that your in the business.

...I doubt we'll ever see a Players Handbook/Dungeon Masters Guide/Monster Manual set of three books ever again.
I think we will. I don't think that 5E can sustain the game forever with just updates, and eventually it'll get old and sales will drop off. I think that eventually the game will need a new edition.

We saw the drafts.

WOTC wanted more but couldn't get the new ideas to be backward compatible.

When 5e get old and tired, Generic Arcane/Divine/Primal/Psion spell list, Core Maneuvers, Half Caster Warlocks will return.

But not this year.

I hope not.

By the time a new edition rolls around there will probably be enough employee turnover at WotC that the design philosophies they have now will be completely different then. Just my opinion.

I feel like you're responding to a statement I didn't make.

So you didn't say "I don't expect 5.5e to last very long"? Because I could have sworn you said "as long as 3.0e" which was 3 years. 🤷

Nobody can predict the future but the game is still going strong and the 2024 revision isn't a major upheaval. It was due for a bit of a revision after a decade. Will this iteration last another 10 years? I think that's more likely than the game collapsing and there never being another update.
