Again I mean exceptions based. You do realize that 5e is the simplest ruleset, right? FAR simpler than 3e was.
it is a revision and its name is D&D 2024 core books / PHB 2024, all of this straight from WotC…It could be an edition, a revision, a version, a. 2, or a smerp. But the fact that the marketeers in charge have pointedly refused to give it a name other than D&D has left the job to the community
I dislike them and I do not, for what that is worthTheory - those who dislike the overall changes are much more likely to call this a new edition?
It's simple logic really. "you" said it and "they" didn't so "you" must be wrong.PHB 2024 is wordy? I mean, it wasn't me that named it - I have no stake - but I really don't get that assertion.
"Backward compatible" isn't an objective standard. It's all a sliding scale. I've played a very fun campaign in which the players used 5e stats and adventured in a 0e dungeon with me using unconverted 0e HPs, spell effects, etc. and handwaving everything that didn't work. Was so much fun I did another campaign with 5e characters and a Basic D&D dungeon. Worked fine. Does that mean that 5e is backwards compatible with 0e? No, not really. It doesn’t really matter to me whether it is called a new edition or not, since it’s backwards compatible.
I have just found it is easier to explain to my players and friends as a new edition.
Well, what I didn't say was that Dungeons and Dragons is in a Doomsday scenario. I also didn't predict the imminent death of Dungeons and Dragons. You said those things.
I did say that the 5.5 edition will probably last about as long as the 3.0 edition. It will be a short edition.
The problem is it will be hard to tell when this one ends and the next begins because, I believe, there will be no future editions. Instead, we'll get updates to our digital assets and maybe a splatbook or two.
It is my opinion that Wizards of the Coast is wisely committed to the Second Great Digitization of the Game.
Because a big company told us to stop using that word. Why would it matter if it was a new edition?
