D&D General D&D 2024 does not deserve to succeed

Yeah, I'm only really iffy on FHB and D&D Killers if they start off by saying that the game they're based their own game on sucks. I mean, why would they base their game on a game that they think sucks? Are they just trying to cash in on D&D's popularity because they know their own game could not succeed on its own merits?

But let me be honest with myself here. The Kickstarter doesn't say that D&D sucks. The OP did. The Kickstarter really talks about how they think they've improved on baseline D&D and here's how... etc., etc.

That I don't mind at all. The creator clearly loves D&D. At least enough to base his own game off it.

While I do see parts of it as intriguing and potentially an improvement on D&D 5e, it's not enough of an improvement for me to move from D&D now that I'm back in the fold for my Fantasy RPG fix. When I do my non-D&D games, they're almost always non-D&D adjacent and a different genre. So, for example, I'm also playing Bladerunner and Alien.
Yeah it's not enough. Because it just feels like a massive pile of houserules on someone else's IP with no soul of its own outside of the heart of the designers, the hype of their fans, and the hatred of those who despise the original.

For example If I were to make a fantasy heartbreaker, one of my concepts would to embrace the ideas of Arch-Xs. Not just Archmages but Archpriests, Archfighters, Archrogues, Archpsions, Archgadgeteers, Archmonks etc. All the mechanics and lore would funnel down to the idea that these powerful Humaniods are in the background dealing with each other and warping with planes with their actions. So I'd grab ideas from many different games like 13age Icons or VTM Humanity to display the evolution into being a force of power.

But I wouldn't want fans of my game to go to the forums of games I got inspiration from to badmouth it.

Yeah, but you can say:

"I really like how X is done in system Z Secundus instead of how it was done in system Z Primus" without saying "and system Z Primus sucks! And if you like Z Primus, it's gotta be because you're ignorant and uncultured!"

EDIT: Oh, and as a side note, I looove McDonald's Big Macs. Love 'em. Like... A LOT. But I don't fool myself into thinking they're health food. It's a tasty, tasty treat. Like playing RPGs with my friends after a looooong week of work.

So if that's an analogy the OP wants to run with, I'm down with it. Because.... Big Macs. Holy Heck. I want one Right NOW! I think I'll eat one while playing D&D online this evening.

It's funny seeing people come on a forum dedicated to D&D to tell us how terrible our game is and then act all holier-than-thou because they "know better".

Well, it's a forum created as part of a site dedicated to giving news about the then-in-development 3e. The 2024 revision of 5e is no more "our" game than any other descendant of D&D is.

I absolutely hate the expression “heart breaker”.

I’ve been playing D&D exclusively for 35 years and it would not break my heart at all if some other game took up the number one spot.

I believe the heart that is said to be broken is the designer who thinks their RPG would be popular than it is and often doesn't make much money over its budget if covering it at all

They're called heartbreakers because they always fail, breaking the hearts of their creators.

Though that's less applicable nowadays since PDF and POD mean that niche games can find an audience.

During 4e, that would have been PF1. ;) As for today, it's a wait and see as D&D and the other 5e-adjacent RPGs continue their race for the number one title. :)

Yeah. The term seems designed to be insulting and to uplift WotC's game far beyond what it has a right to.

They don't always fail. You don't have to be as popular as WotC's game to be a success.

I dearly wish WotC understood that.
