Cocktails

Had one of the worst Negronis last week in an airport bar. It’s three ingredients! How do you screw that up? Easy. Let it sit on the counter for 10 minutes before giving it to the customer so it’s already watered down.
I ordered a negroni at a place on Cape Cod once. Nice place, full bar, asked them if they could make a negroni. They said, "of course!" They were dirty liars who lied and could not make a negroni. Instead of a negroni, they gave me a G&T in a Collins glass (edit: told this one before, it seems) filled with ice with a splash of grenadine, and a lime wedge. It wasn't even good gin.

Yikes.

"Hey, I told this guy you could make a negroni."
"What's a negroni?"
"It's like an alcoholic Shirley Temple, I think."
"So a G&T with a splash of grenadine?"
"Yep, sounds right."

😐

I don't know, but it was summer on Cape Cod, so they probably didn't want to stop pouring white zinfandel for the looking-for-a-second-wife/husband crowd. If Muffy and Buffy get surly, no one'll have a good time.

Never did like rye; I prefer bourbon.

I like Angel's Envy when I can afford it, Basil Hayden is good too. But for mixing cocktails (like an Old Fashioned or maybe a hot toddy), I use either Maker's Mark or Buffalo Trace.
The way I dress up my Old Fashioned/Improved Whiskey Cocktail I don't normally need to use a pricey booze. Old Overholt or Rittenhouse work very well.

There's a pretty decent range of gins out there, including styles that are aggressively pungent with their juniper flavors, and ones where it's much milder.
Yup. When I started getting into it I went gentle with New Amsterdam (mild but far nicer than it has any right to be at the price point), and have since enjoyed a nice balance from stuff like Hendrick's, Drumshambo, Gray Whale, and Monkey 47, and even Ford's and Tanqueray at times. Grey Whale was the first one I enjoyed a classic martini with.
