D&D 5E 2024 D&D is 2014 D&D with 4E sprinkled on top

When 5E came out in 2014, some people bemoaned that the best parts of 4E hadn't been brought forward.

Well, it's now ten years later. And guess what? Bloodied is back. Martials have weapon masteries that give them at-will powers. Many monsters impose conditions on a hit.

My hot take is that the biggest changes to 5E in the 2024 version are mostly borrowed from 4E.

I think you are overstating it.

Well, I am glad bloodied is back, though I wouldn’t have called it one of the best parts of 4e. Weapon masteries are neat, but they are definitely not 4e at-will powers. And we are definitely seeing more 4e influence on monster design, which I do think is a good thing, though we’re also seeing some new monster design choices that I’m not as much of a fan of. Overall I’d say 5e post 2024 revisions still mostly takes superficial elements from 4e and doesn’t take much of anything from 4e’s actual design philosophy.

A reasonable interpretation. I expect a similar (if smaller) division in the fanbase as a result.

It’s a very slight nudge into a 4e direction but I would not consider anything they added to be wholesale 4e, more a slight philosophical shift, and I am not liking much of the underlying shift to a more gamist version, even if some of its actual implementations are welcome.

They could easily have done the same shift if there had never been a 4e, to me you are overstating the influence

Agreed.

To be fair 4e was the most gamist version of d&d, so anything shifting that way could be reminiscent of 4e for some.
